i have 2 black labs,both 1.3years old.
i give them pig skin twists every day,for their teeth. but it does get expensive.
i have noticed that raw hide is cheaper. i would like to give them some, to help with cost, and to give them something that will last longer then 2 minutes. but i dont want it to hurt them.

If you buy the right sized chew for your dog then it will be fine. Sometimes gum bleeding could occur, but usually this would only happen if you had given them a chew that was too big for them.

My dog also has a ball with a hole in, and we fill it up with his biscuits that he gets for his main meals (much less fattening than biscuits used as treats). He has to push and throw the toy around in order to get the biscuits out, it keeps him entertained for ages, and is certainly pain-free!

I once had an elderly lady for a friend. She had a wonderful little dog. A mix of some sort. She had the dog trained well and it behaved very well. Learn here https://tr.im/6ljiI

She kept an uncovered candy dish on her coffee table with candy in it. The dog was forbidden to eat the candy. When she was in the room observing the dog he did not even appear to notice the candy. One day while she was in her dinning room she happened to look in a mirror and could see her dog in the living room. He did not know he was being watched. For several minutes he was sitting in front of the candy bowl staring at the candy. Finally he reached in and took one. He placed it on the table and stared at it, he woofed at it. He stared some more, licked his chops and PUT IT BACK in the bowl and walked away. Did he want the candy, oh yeah. Did he eat it? Nope. They can be trained that well but most, I'll admit, are not trained that well. When I was a young boy, maybe 5 years old. We had a german shepherd. He was very well trained also. My mom could leave food unattended on the table, no problem. She would open the oven door and set a pan roast beef or roast chicken on the door to cool. No problem. He would not touch it, watched or not. But butter? Whole other story. You leave a stick of butter anywhere he could reach and it was gone. He was a large shepherd so there were not many places he could not reach. Really, I think the number of dogs trained to the point they will leave food alone when not being supervised is very small indeed.
.
Now if we are talking obedience training, not food grubbing, that is a different story. Way back when I was first learning obedience training one of the final exercises was to put our dogs in a down/stay and not only leave the room but leave the building for 15 minutes. The only person that stayed was our trainer, not the owners. Most of the dogs in my class did not break their stay, which would be an automatic fail. I'm happy to report my dog was one of the ones that passed.

Try a Nylabone. Rawhides or rubber bones can become intestinal obstructions if the dog bites off too big a chunk. And some time ago, there was a problem with imported rawhides carrying bacteria.

Nylabones are more pricy than rawhides at first, but they last much longer. And unlike rubber bones or rawhides, the nylon doesn't come off in chunks when the dogs chew on them.

Plus, the Nylabone frills and helps with gum and teeth care.

Pig ears and Rawhide are hard for the dogs system to digest. Not really the best treats for them. My dogs LOVE to chew so I give them All natural Beef chews (Bully Sticks). These chews are 100% digestable and are better for the dogs than the hide or ears. My LabX is a gobbler and used to practically choke on the rawhide chews, but with the bully sticks she never chokes not even when there is only a small piece left, she just chews it up and swallows it..

Raw Hide is Bad! Not only is it almost impossible to digest but it helps them to develop a taste for leather.....shoes, gloves etc. beware! I suggest going to the butcher section of your local supermarket and getting Marrow Bones. These are uncooked beef bones that most supermarkets usually package and sell after cutting their steaks. They are about 2-3" thick but if you go straight to the butcher he can usually give or get you the larger, uncut bones (6 - 12"+). DO NOT COOK THE BONES. Dogs were made to digest raw meats, they will NOT get sick from uncooked meats. EVER! Plus cooking or boiling the bones make them brittle and prone to splinter which is a choking hazard. I Keep a bunch of these in my freezer, it takes longer for the dogs to work the marrow out, and is a nice treat for their gums. Give them the bones raw or frozen and let them have them until they are breaking pieces off the bone itself...not likely with the larger bones. Wicked cheap, and the dogs love them!

Raw hides are bad for their digestive system. So they have lots of fun things at Petsmart. They have Kong toys, you put a treat in the middle of the toy and they play with it until it comes out. They have stuff at Vets, like CET Chews. They are really good for the teeth. I don't know if you want to buy that though. I know they make non-food toys for dogs, that help with their teeth.

Not if you get the right size for your dog. I give my dog raw hides but take them away when they become small enough for my dog to choke on. Of course I always make sure I have a new raw hide in hand to replace the one that has to be tossed.

Just really watch your dogs. I worked at a Vet clinic and had to do many surgeries for obstructed intestines, from pieces of rawhide that got swallowed and blocked. This is a costly surgery and on a few patients we almost lost them from sepsis, when the intestine tore in the abdominal cavitey an leaked, the rest of the intestine was dying. It can have a potential danger, but if you watching them they should be ok.

They could choke on them, and they're not the best for the digestive tract, but the rawhide chews are great for your dogs teeth. Teeth are a 'use em or lose em' type of thing and if you're dog doesn't have something to chew on his/her teeth will eventually loosen up and fall out.

I don't give my big dogs raw hides that have the knots on the end, they can chew the knot off and swallow it and then get an obstruction. I give them retriever rolls, and pressed rawhide, they last much longer and it takes them longer to chew them.
