The generic name for the medication you are looking for is praziquantel. It is now available over-the-counter under the name of "Tradewinds Tape Worm Tabs for Cats", and is sold at PETsMART. This is exactly the same dewormer that veterinarians use to treat tapeworms (sold under the brand name of Droncit or Drontal, made by Bayer).
NOTE: Tapeworms are transmitted by FLEAS, so if your cat has "tapes", she probably has fleas also. Ask your vet for prescription flea products, or buy brand-name Frontline Plus or Advantage. Some veterinarians (and online resellers) will sell these products without requiring an examination.

My cats had tape worms once a while back and the only thing that cured them was the medicine I got from the vet. I called the vet an made an appointment and told them about the problem, I didn't have to bring the cats to the vet the only thing they asked me for was a stool sample, so i went to the vet and i gave them the stool sample and yes they were indeed tape worms, the vet gave me this little pill that cost me 2 dollars (about 3 years ago) and it worked immediately, I gave them the pill and never saw another worm again. Now if your cats have tape worms is because they have fleas, so you have to take care of that too. If your cat has fleas when they clean themselves they can swallow fleas and that is what causes tape worms, If you invest a little bit of money you can get rid of the problem for sure. Get the Frontline Plus for cats, it costs about 30 dollars for a 3 month supply, it works great you can see the fleas drop dead in no time!
The only place where you can get the medicine for tape worms is at the vet, but trust me, get the frontline and give them the pill and your pretty kittie will be flea free and worm free in a week!

Well you can buy de wormer medication over thr couter at just about any pet store. I've also seen the same stuff at Wal Mart but i have to say I really don't know how good that stuff works. Honestly if you can take the cat to the vet, that would be the best thing. Tapeworms are easy to treat. My kitten had them a month ago, one treatment from the vet and they were gone.

It is better to get the medicine from the vet, that way you are not wasting your money on something that won't work. DO NOT give animals GARLIC, it makes them anemic and they can bleed to death if they are cut or injured. We have people call and say they need tapeworm medicine and they can just come pick it up if they know about how much the cat weighs. They get tape worms from fleas to kill the fleas and you don't have to worry about tape worms.

The best way is to just go to the vet and get him/her de-wormed there and then get some good flea control so she stops swallowing fleas(which will give her more tapeworms). I wouldnt trust any over the counter dewormer..

My cat had worms. Your best bet is to go to the vet. Getting cats to take a pill is really hard. They had to shove it in the back of her throat then hold mouth closed so she was forced to swallow. She's all better now though - gaining weight finally!
If it is a financial issue, then just call and ask your vet to recommend something.

Try your grocery store near the cat food. They usually carry some worm medicine (not sure about tapeworms) plus don't know how good it is. It is usually Harts brand.
