My grandmother was the best. Her love for me was unconditional and as a child that helped my self esteem a great deal. She taught me the importance of the family. I loved her best because she always made me feel like the world was a better place just because I was in it.
She loved me even during my troubled teens and embraced my boyfriend even though she must have disliked his long hair and unkempt appearance. Her love and support extended to my husband (she called him mi nietito) and our children until her dying day at the ripe age of 103.
I was lucky to have had my grandmother in my life, she was my anchor to solid ground, she kept me from drowning in the whirlwind of my parents lives. I have tons of memories, too many to choose from. I remember sitting by her as she baked pastries for huge family parties, the aroma of her cooking, her storytelling, but most of all is how loved she made me feel.
Thinking back I wonder how she did it. She worked full time as a school teacher for thirty years, so there must have been times when she must have felt too tired to deal with me. Yet I have no recollection of her ever making me feel anything but loved.
I could never return all the love she gave during her lifetime, though I tried and named my first born daughter after my grandmother. I hope that someday I can be half as good a grandmother as she was.

Your question made me smile-- and fell very bittersweet.
My grandma is still living-- I am 39 and she is 82- but we just found out today that she is possibly terminally ill.
I've been crying off and on all day- grateful that I've had her for so long, but so sad that I'm going to miss her...
She's a wonderful person, and I am all the better for knowing her.
Thanks for the warm feelings in heart.

I see my Grandmother all the time......but it is my Grandfather that left us 20 years ago and I dearly remember him sitting in his chair and he had a cigar stand that sat right next to it inside he always kept a big bowl of caramels....he never said much because my Grandmother always spoke for him....in fact I cant really even remember him saying anything for that matter but I will never forget the caramels and the big smile he always had.

i don't have fond memories like you do for my grandmom. She's a sensitive fool whom no one in the family likes. She keeps thinkin that everyone is trying to abandon her and she has problems with everyone she has live in. Becoz of her, i couldn;t wear black colour for many yrs becox she thinks black in unlucky colour. I was often scolded by my parents when she complains to them about me. I never purposely hurt her feelings but she sucks!!!

yes , I have had the opportunity to know my grandmother well , she is gone now and missed dearly. My favorite memory of her was, she would have us kids on the weekend, one Easter we went to church and afterwords, she had hidden my Easter basket in the washer, she was allot of fun,
thank you for such a thoughtful question and the wonderful recall of memories.
