aj_hefner,because it is the culmination of spiritual pursuit.
LIFE IS A SPIRITUAL SCHOOL. it spans a great number of life times. christians do the same thing but see and express it differently. READ ephesians 2-22 & 4-6, LIBERATION is the same for everyone,we "lose ourselves"when we merge into unity with GOD within our own HEART. this is what is meant by ,"it is appointed once for man to die". What you refer to as "Earthly Existence" is also termed as "Material Existence"
Follower of Vedic Culture want liberation from Material existence so that they can attain Spiritual Existence ...

There is a description of Bliss-full Spiritual Existence in the Kingdom of God which is attainable...
Earthly existence is mainly characterized by four Main Suffering:
Birth, Death, Old age And Diseases..

But Bhagavad Gita states that our actual nature as children's of God , As Spirit soul is that we have Eternal Existence, full of Knowledge, and Bliss... Soul never dies but still in this existence it constantly changing one body after another...
All Such bodies are simple temporary and leads to suffering and dissatisfaction ...
For Humans, God has given Intelligence, by using which one can get rid of the cycle of Birth and Death and attain to Eternal Blissful Existence.. That is the purpose of Human Life..

I don't know anything about the Hindus or their beliefs, but if that's part of their tenets then obviously they know at least some of the truth.

The truth I possess derives from the understanding of the Bible as given by the Spirit of Truth. The entire Bible, from front to back, is concerned with releasing Adam (Man) from his sentence of death, from his imprisonment in the world, which is "beneath", and restoring him to his former estate that is "above." The world beneath, our world, is the "underworld." It is the place where man fell to when he fell. It is a place of torment, a place for the dead. Those who dwell in it know nothing; they do not know whom they are, why they're here, where they came from, or where they are going. Thus the story of salvation in the Scriptures refers to our escape from our many sojourns in this world.
