I used to manage an apartment building.

We would pull a comprehensive credit report. It shows your credit, any liens, bad debts, judgements, evictions and wage garnishments. We could also get a grade for your check writing history, so if you've been blacklisted by a bank, they can find that out. That isn't as bad, though, the landlord can then ask you to pay by cashier's check or money order if they go ahead and sign a lease with you.

Never try and hide or minimize something from a landlord when you are filling out an application. It is much better to mention it and take responsibility for it. Don't blame someone else for your credit situation. Don't automatically assume it will rule you out. I took chances on some people with lousy credit if they were up front about it and looked like they were really trying to get their life back on track.

Whether you pay your bills on time, whether you've had any judgements against you, how much money you owe others.
