She's four, really smart, pretty obedient, catches on fast. My mom grew up with dogs but its the first one she's had. She's trying to raise it like its not a puppy. Renaming it, expecting al this stuff out of it immediately and thinking its dumb or deliberatley not listening to her requests the first time. It was an outside dog before and now more inside. It had a companion before but not now.

Plus...my mom wants to name her Sasparilla (ew), WonderDog (cheesy), or MightyDog. ok so her original name, sissy, doesn't work for my mom. does she have to make it worse?

How can I show my mom that she can stop yelling, expecting so much, and calling names and that I can train her? She listens to me the most. She listens well to all of us though.

Actually, moms can be harder to train. ;)

I'm sorry, I am just laughing so hard! I've never been able to train my mother so I'm not qualified for this one.

Okay... Maybe if you each made a small list of short simple things that you could train the dog to do -- cut up the list and put it into a jar. Mom and you each take alternate turns and draw a out a few. Then each of you pick your fave trick, and train it to the dog. I will guess she will be impressed at the progress you make. Of course, this depends on how realistic the tricks might be. :)

And to the other comment, dogs do understand words. You have to teach them the words first. :)

Your mom needs to calm down, enjoy the dog and not expect too much out of her for the first couple of months as far as training goes. There is no telling what all this dog has been thru before it came into your life. Right now, the dogs just needs to feel loved and made a part of the family. The other stuff will all come in time. Since your mom likes the name sasperilla and the former name was sissy, how about calling her Sassy which is kind of a combination of the 2 names.

If you have cable, have her watch 'The Dog Whisperer'. Have your mom enroll the dog (more for her than the dog) in a local obedience class, which your vet's office can help you find. Also, get some dog training & behavior books from the library. It sounds like your mom forgot dogs are not humans in fur suits!

Mom needs to change the name to something similar so the dog will understand it. 'Sissy' to 'Missy' would probably be a smooth transition.

Dogs are very smart animals, but when you compare them to humans they probably have an IQ of around 15, so Mom just needs to be patient and not expect too much too fast.

dogs think they are being told off when they are shouted at, so they may have done something right, but not the right thing, meaning they will most likely not do it ever again. this is good sometimes, when they are being bad, but not when they are being good. They need to be rewarded!

It is true that it is harder to teach an old dog new tricks, but tell your mom that YOU would like to train her. when she sees what a good job you are doing, she might catch on.

Have you tried explaining that to your mom? If not, try that first. If you have, why not try getting your mom a guide book on dogs, and letting her read it.
