Whould it break like a mirror, or would it explode?

last week my 4yr old was playing a video game, next thing I knew something fell and he was crying. Chest of drawers and tv fell over and the chest of drawers was on top of him. He was ok, thank God, but ever since then I've thought all kind of horriable thoughts.

gp4rts is correct in saying crt's(cathode ray tubes) are quite tough the screen you are watching can be up to an half of an inch thick-behind this there is what is called the shadowmask a large plate of metal drilled with thousands of holes which not only helps provide the image but also provides strength to the front of the crt. the weakest part of the tube is the neck-this is the bit you see glowing if you look into the air grilles on top or at the back of the set. if the tube where to take an impact here the neck would break and a loud (but breif) hissing sound would be heard (as the tube is held in a vacuum state this is the sound of air being sucked into the neck). if the tube where to take a dramatic impact on its front it would implode.

I assume you mean a cathode ray tube TV. Depending on how the break is caused, it may just crack, but it can also implode since it is a vacuum tube. It is in fact very difficult to break a picture tube. A set will survive a fall face down from 4 feet (my 36" TV did--there was a scratch on the face, but that's all).

Since the CRT is really a large vaccum tube it would implode rather than explode

no,
just some electronic parts get damaged.
you can get some smoke coming out and the screen becomes damaged - not broken but just burnt type.

I have seen one when it busted at the end of a very exciting football game - as if it was party to it.

What on earth are your TVs built with? TNT generators? it would probably just crack unless you did horrible things to it.
Nuclear fission TV!
