First color broadcast was the Tournament of Roses Parade on January 1, 1954. The TVs on that day were only in the hands of NBC, since they did the broadcast as a demonstration. The TVs were mass-produced in March of that year.

Programs were first broadcast in color in 1954, but due to the fact that the receivers were so expensive, color TV didn't become widespread until the early 1960's.

However "The Thing" is a movie. Color movies came fairly early but were expensive and difficult to produce and it wasn't until the mid-sixties that films finally became primarily in color.

By 1951 (the year "The Thing" was released) color movies did exist, but chances are the director of "The Thing" chose to shoot in black and white to save money. I've seen the movie a few times and I can honestly say that I don't think color would have made it any better. Which is not to say it's bad, but rather that it's just fine the way it is.

incedently that movie's a classic. It's got a plot, unlike most movies nowadays.
