It's the end it eats with ... the other end is the tail. Worms have bristles (no, not bristols) which point backwards. If you run your fingers along a worm, one way feels smooth, the other feels rough. If it feels smooth, you are going away from the head.
Only worms which are ready to reproduce have a ring round them, so not all worms will have that.
