why is it that when I finish building a piece of furniture from Ikea, I always end up with one piece that doesn't fit anywhere. why is that? does that often happen to you? do you ever keep the Mystery Piece "just in case"?

It happens with Argos too??? Whats more annoying is when one piece is missing! Also why does only one sock ever come out of the washing machine???

Good Q,,,smiles.

First of all I wouldn't own Ikea even if it was free,,,no offense.

What I most enjoy is most directions,,when they are included, but have no real explanations, only pictures. Beyond that I also enjoy having "extras" but only in the Hardware. Sadly the opposite is usually true, and we end up running to HD for one screw or bolt and nut that was not included in the count.

If you followed the steps, and the piece is functional, looks like it should, and hasn't fallen apart, just count it to REALLY POOR quality control from ANY manufacturer.

Keeping in mind that packaging is nearly as mundane a job as actually crafting the "GLIT" furniture pieces and parts, and the people who do that for a career, at whatever low wage, or country the production takes place in, you can realize how it's very possible for the entire operation to be based on a "WHO CARES" attitude.

There are no degrees of Quality. Something is or is isn't. High quality need not be a disclaimer on any product, nor would LOW Quality ever sell very well.

Sure, keep it. I'd even note the company about it asking. It's possible, depending on how you word your correspondence, that you might recieve another piece, as a duplicate, gratis,,, and maybe,,,LOLOL,,, it will actually NEED that extra piece you have now.

I often buy and assemble Ikea furniture and that has never happened to me. Perhaps you should count and note all the pieces to make sure the that the set contains all the pieces it says it does. I always do this before I assemble anything to make sure I have all the parts and do it correctly.

That depends on what the leftover peice is.
Some companies will throw in extra screws or nails, things to that nature .. just to make sure you have enough..or if you accidently lose one.
And yes I would hang onto the leftover peice... cause you never know.
