Salons are best

A reputable salon may be better than the store-bought hair dyes, but the fact remains that hair dye damages hair. So if your hair is thin and dull, you may want to consider focusing on conditioning instead.

Well I have rarely had good results in a salon.. so much for the concensus huh? I'd say go to a salon in your case because your hair is already not in good condition and if you screw up.. well let's put it this way, you are more likely to screw up than a salon. If you leave lightening formulas on your hair close to your scalp it can burn seriously. I have seen this. The poor girl's mother thought the girl had some sort of infection when it was actually burns to her scalp. Eventually the mom took her to the salon and was told to get her to the hospital for antibiotic. Don't risk more trouble. You may just need conditioning treatments.

Since your hair is thin, you should go to a salon and have it personally done. If the money is a problem, you can try your local vocational or beauty schools. Sometimes they have open days and the cost is a lot cheaper than a salon. There is a slight warning, the people are in training, but they have been educated and there is a teacher present to overlook them.

Anybody with thin, fine hair should have a professional dye their hair.

Over the counter products regardless if is ammonia free are no good for your hair.

yes but also check for peroxide. i dont suggest using good old drugstore dyes such as loreal and those. even without ammonia, can fry oyur hair. go to a reputable salon that only uses natural dyes. the color is jsut as good if not better. it also really conditions hair. dont believe commercials: those other dyes do not conditione your hair but will dry it out and damage it.
