I think they are charming. And very catching. My sister, who was raised in Pa and now lives in NC, has developed a southern accent and a love for sweetened tea!

I was born and raised in Central Florida and had a "Florida Cracker: accent until I started living in other parts of the USA. I don't have any particular accent now, but can immitate most.
Accents are accents. You can sound terrible in any accent, and you can sound noble and great in any accent. It really depends on what you say and not how you say it.
That said, I do wish that Southern women didn't have that whiney sound to their voices. Too much submissiveness, I guess.

I am from AL, one parent from GA one from MS. When I married at 19 and moved to CA, it was a cold shock that people were horrible to me with my accent, prejudging me in many ways, so I painstakingly lost it. I wish I hadn't.
On the other hand, my dad was a rocketscientist with a DEEP MS drawl. Everybody loved him. When he was a young navy officer in the fifties, he and his capt. on a troop transport used to run a poker game (new yankee marines every six weeks, transported across the Atlantic). Every six weeks, those two brilliant southern officers took every penny off of young men who had an expensive prejudice against southerners!
I love accents of all different sorts. Southern makes me feel right at home.
Keep yours!

I think that a southern accent often is associated with being a redneck, a bigot, being ignorant, stupid etc. etc. Maybe this is thanks to films and TV series, I don't know.

A very slight one is okay and, I think, adds a bit of character, but a really thick one just makes you sound like a redneck

I'm not into them myself. Sounds like someone was smacked across the face with a shovel.
