I've been taking my pregnant mini dachshund's temp for over a week now, and it's been 98 degrees for the last two days before last night. At bedtime last night it was 99.9 and today it's been in the 99's. Today is her 63rd day so she is due.
I've heard that a dog's temp will decrease for a few days in the 98 range, then right before she delivers, it will rise a degree or two, then go back down again. Is this true and if so, can anyone tell me how much longer until she goes into labor? She's been having a dishcarge for over a week now, and nesting.

Thanks to ALL!!}}

I took her to the vet 4 days ago, and he said her cervix was closed and everything was fine.

I've been using a mercury rectal thermometer like the vet told me to, and her discharge has been pee colored and slimy.

If your dogs temperature drops to 97 degrees and stays there for 1 hour, labor is imminent within 12 hours. Until that time her temperature should be normal. I would be concerned if her temperature has been below normal for as long as you stated. Once the pups are delivered her temperature should return to normal right away. Gestation is normally 58 to 63 days, however it is not uncommon to go 64-65 days. The discharge is normal unless it is green and foul smelling. After one pup is born it is normal for the fluid to be green. If she seems to be in active labor and contractions continue for two hours without producing a puppy, take your pet to your Vet.

Dogs Temperature Before Giving Birth

It will drop within 24 hours of labor. You have to be very consistent for the temp taking to be accurate. Every morning, before she gets up and moves around, otherwise it is fairly useless. The drop can be very brief and it is certainly possible to miss it. With some dogs it can be a very small dip. It also won't neccessarily be in the 98 range, it really does depend on her baseline temp.

Should be any time now. I see you have a daschund. If she hasn't had puppies before be sure to watch her carefully. If she's in active labor and pushing for more than 30 minutes take her to the vet or ER. A dogs normal temp is between 101.5 and 102.5 Are you sure your thermometer is right? What kind of discharge is she having? Blood? You really should be talking to your vet about this. If she hasn't had pups by the morning please call them. Normal gestation for a dog is 59 to 64 days.

yes, their temp does spike before giving birth...though if she has been having discharge for that long, and nesting, it may be time to contact a vet, just to make sure that she is doing okay. dachshunds (espeically the mini ones) are prone to birthing problems due to their size, and many of them end up delivering by c-section. good luck!

No it drops 1-2 degrees and the pups are usually born within twelve hours, of that, she will not eat or drink, so do not worry, she knows what she is doing.
Good Luck.

I would expect pups tonight. The next thing to watch for is when you take her out to poop, look for bright orange/mustard colored poop. That is the gut cleaning itself out. When that happens, do not leave her side!! Good luck!!
