I'll answer your last question first:
RAM = Random Access Memmory is where your computer temporarily stores the currently running program. when you run more than one program, the operating system uses space on the harddrive called a 'swap file' to hold the programs that you have minimized.
Now that you know that, there are 3 things that will make for a fast computer. A fast CPU (1.6GhZ or better is my reccomendation), fast memory (look for the latest DDR400 or better) and a fast hard drive (5200 RPM and a access time in the 8 to 6 millisecond range). Keep in mind that hard drive sized only tells you how much you store on it. The amount of memory the computer has determines how much of the slower hard drive it must use when you run multiple programs, so the more memory the better (anywhere between 512Mb and 1Gb is usually enough for most people but you can't go wrong with more).
As for which is better, Dell, HP, ectera, it your buget that will determine what you can get for your buck. Dell only uses Intell processors and this limits your choices. Most of the others use both AMD and Intel giving you a choice. The performance differences between AMD and Intel are actually too minute for the average user to notice so your choice is mostly based on your buget. AMD computers usually cost less to own than an Intel computer.
In choosing a computer, ask yourself what you are going to do with it?
A good general use laptop computer will have at a minimum a 1.6GhZ CPU with at least 512Mb RAM, a 60Gb harddrive, a CDRW/DVD drive, 2 USB 2.0 ports and 12" to 14" screen.
If you are going to be gaming, make sure you get one with a dedicated graphics card with at least 64Mb of memory and not a integrated one. Most laptops come with wirless, ethernet and modems standard if you buy new. When buying a used laptop make sure to ask about these before purchasing.
I hope I've given you a starting point. The rest is up to you and your wallet.

I have a dell, I like it. Some people don't like dell but to me its the best. Gateway sucks, well I don't know about there laptops but to me there not the greatest. Apple is good but thats if you want to spend lots of money and if you will be doing alot of graphics on it. HP sucks, don't ever get one, you will have lots of problems at least I did when I had both Compact and a laptop. Toshiba's are not bad either but not the best. Sony, there not bad either.
I say dell would be the best, you can send the computer back or get help right at your door if there is any problems.

'am using Dell but also experienced with IBM ThinkPad (that's what they called their laptop)..i would suggest IBM ThinkPad..not to say Dell is not good, it's just that the parts are very expensive..the IBM ThinkPad, i would say, is tough..u know that u have to be very careful with the screen and all but ThinkPad's screen is not easily tear...but again, buying is all about whether u have enough budget to go on with that..for comp. to me, good money, good thing! RAM is the computer memory, now it can go up to 1GB..the standard size for hard disk is 80GB. but then, both can be upgraded to ur liking..am still learning on this but if u have any doubts, just msg me, i'll try to find the answer for u =)
if u want to know the meaning for the computer terms u can go to www.webopedia.com

Depends on what kind of use you are going to do.
Dell - is affordable , but look wise, i dont like it.
Dont buy SONY. i have one, you could use it as a heater instead as it tends to get too hot
HP - is now eating market share of dell, prices are getting competitive..
my advice, wait for some more time, windows vista is on its way, look for expandable memory option , bluetooth compatibility, wireless access. stuff which will make life simpler. DO take addn waranty if you are buying...
an Ideal cong would be
1GB RAM, Intel Duo processor,60GB hard disk, DVD/CD (write is crap, go for external if you need one). windows vista compatibile.

Dell is not reliable. They often send out incorrect parts for custom-built computers. Check www.epinions.com for opinions on laptops.

Your not ready for it if you don't know what R.A.M. is. It will cost lots of cash too. It's called the Apple Mac Pro. See link Below.
You did ask for the best.

i think the toshiba Portégé M400 's are the best because they are tablet pcs,so if you're a student you can bring them to class and take notes on it in your own handwriting then later convert your notes to text which is really good for studying for tests
