It's not impossible for her to straighten it, she just either doesn't want to spend the time to do it, which is what it sounds like considering she puts it up all the time, or her hair is frizzy when she does. There is nothing worng with curly or wavy hair. She should really consider at least trying it with different products before ruling out not being able to wear it curly. Here are some tips:
Curly or wavy but limp hair:
If the hair needs body, try a volumizing moose on the roots. Helps to lift the hair and give it a beautiful bounce. Apply gel throughout the hair. Be careful not to use too much. Then, use a blow dryer with a diffuser on the end to dry. Will give you beautiful, soft, natural looking curls.
For the out of control curly or wavy hair:
Tight curls or very frizzy ones can be maintained! Try using a good hair serum, like Friz Eaze. You might also go to your local beauty supply store and asking one of the stylists there. There are lots of products for this. Basically, use the same procedure as above, but apply the serum first.
For Curly or Wavy hair to straight:
If you have out of control friz or extremely curly hair, go to your local salon and get a relaxor! It's basically like getting a perm, except they straighten the hair instead of curling it. Even if it doesn't completely get rid of the curl, it will definently help to at least make it controlable. If the hair is more manageable, you might just need something like biosilk to help maintain the friz. You can find Biosilk at any beauty supply store. It works great.
As for different hair styles, it depends on the cut first. If you assume she wants to keep it long, there are lots of do's she can do. Here is a fav of mine:
Pull hair back, as if to put into a ponytail. Tightly twist around like going to make a bun, but let the hair out on the top once it has gone 1 time around. Apply bobby pins to secure all around the bun part. Apply a very light ammount of gel to the ends hanging, or curl with a curling iron. Apply a good holding spray. This will look very cute.
I have a ton of simple updo's for you if you need them. If you need more tips on handling hair, whatever the condition, please feel free to e-mail me at Autumn_Anne@yahoo.com or IM me on YIM with the ID Autumn_Anne . I'm more than happy to help! Good Luck and Happy Styling!!!

there is no such thing as to thick hair to straighten just take chunks of it and put it up and straighten under neath then do layer by layer. my hair is super thick too so that what i do or u can just thin it out by goign to the hair dresser and asking them to "thin it out". whichc is just basically them layering it. but go to a place that will do a good job not a super cuts or perfect look or hair barn or whatever.

How about my hairstyle? It's very suitable for people with curly and unmanageable hair. And on top of that, it's cool having this kind of hairstyle.

Get it cut shoulder lenght, with long bangs. It looks VERY cool.
If you scruch it up a bit, with a loose curl to it, it looks very good. A bit of gel or moose, and 5 minuets in front of a mirrior, and it will look amazing.

an easy but surprisingly drastic way to change any hairstyle is simply to move her part. if its in the middle, put it on the side. then maybe add a pretty barette?
what a change!

Why doesn't she straighten it and wear it out?
Or wear it in a pony-tail.
