You have to use a permanent dye to lighten dark hair, not a semi permanent or temporary dye. If that still doesn't work, get it done by a hairdresser.

well, haave you tried to bleach it? i mean if you want it lighter then you have to either try to go blonde or get the bleach out. don't leave it in for a long time because it will hurt your hair but leave it on long enough to make your hair the color you want then just touch up the roots. make sure that when you reach the color you want you time how long it took to get it that color so when you need to toouch up you can leave it in the amount of time and it will be even.

I could answer your question, any time you put artificial color on your hair, you can't go back and put another one to make it brighter, It just won't work . It will work on your virgin hair but not the previously colored hair. Go to the salon and try some hi-lites that will do the trick.

i've had the same problem...and it is very hard without bleach. If you want it to be a lighter brown...try used a dark or medium shade of blonde, that will make it lighter!
good luck!

my hair is really dark brown. i got blonde highlights and they worked perfectly. but, i wanted my hair back to its original color, so i dyed it to its normal brown shade, but the dye made the blonde highlights a regular brown.
maybe yours isn't working because you dont leave the dye in long enough. the longer your leave in the dye, the brighter it gets. but leaving it in too long will lead to over-processing it and it will burn your scalp.

Go to a salon, or pick a lighter color than you want and leave it on longer than the product recommends to make it lighter. Good luck.

Bleach.
Get it profecinally done, however.
Talk to them first, but I have red hair, and they were able to bleach it lightly enough that it turned a dark strawberry-blonde.
You can lessen the intensity of bleach, and I think if you've tried plain lightening teqniques before, it may be what you need.

See a professional to get the desired tone. You will need to strip the color, and if you're still not finding success, you may want to consider having it done for you. If you're concerned about the cost, you may want to see if there are any beauty schools nearby, and have it done there under the supervision of a professional.

I went to cosmetology school and the best thing to do when you have dark hair is to use bleach, and then color it to the brown that you want.

use the lightest shade of blonde dye to lighten it. But be aware that most brown hair has natural red highlights that will come out when you lighten your hair.
