My son insists that our dogs eat rocks to aide in the digestion of food. I say that's only in birds.
So why?

I currently have 3 dogs. 2 adults and a pup.
2 of them pick up, carry and chew on rocks and mud...

No, dogs eat anything so stop him or you may have to have a vet remove the rocks!

Rocks only help digestion in birds. That said, you need to stop it by removing the rocks from your yard or follow it around and take them out of its mouth. If the dog is swallowing the rocks, you could be in for a costly and painful stomach surgery. They don't digest and it may not be passing them.

Your dog is probably not getting enough rawhides and other stuff to chew on to stimulate his chewing impulse. Dogs (like people) need to chew on things, thus putting pressure on the jawbone via the teeth, to keep the jaw strong. If the dog doesn't chew on anything for long enough his teeth will start to fall out... Same goes for people- if you lose a tooth, the jawbone will recede in that area from lack of use. This is why old peoples dentures don't fit them anymore after a while.

i've never heard of a dog eating rocks. I guess it would just poop them out. but fowl are the only things that need them. so unless your dog has a guizzard its not doing him any good. Maybe he wants to weigh more? Dogs eat grass for a stomach aches but i would think rocks would give then bellyaches. come on now, did you actually SEE him eat rocks?

Nobody knows why dogs eat anything. My sister's dog eats those glass Christmas tree balls. My dog eats cat sh*t. My old dog used to eat used feminine napkins. Dogs are like goats in that they'll eat anything and genetically they're not too far off from scavenging wolves and hyenas.

Dogs do stupid stuff sometimes.
If your dog eats too many rocks,
it will need surgery to have them removed.

maybe the rocks remind him of dog food? if you think about it they are pretty similar(ie; size, shape, hardness) rocks are bad for dogs tho so dont let him eat any more.

i dont know of any dogs that eat rocks.. maybe your dog is just..different?
