What does the Jewish religion think happens to a person after they die?

Jewish religion is a little vague on this subject because we do not say you have to "believe" in something in order to be "saved" and go to "heaven". Rather, the emphasis is on how you lead your life now here on earth, with compassion and charity, just because it is the right thing to do, not because you're hoping for salvation. Well, that's my personal take on it, not any official policy!

this question is deal with by the rabbinic commentators and is very confusing and convoluted with many different opinions.

Basically, religious Jewry believes in judgment after death, a possible period of re-education and separation from god until a set time has elapsed and then a closeness with god. There is also a sense of a "next world" but commentators are split between a notion that that is what happens after death, or that is what the term is for the resurrection after the coming of the messiah in the future.

There is also some notion of "reincarnation" but it is not universally accepted or even understood.

A trip to Himmel. Heaven. Or boiling forever like a chicken in your own schmaltz.

props to rosends, as usual.

I just want to make an important point:
Jews DO believe in hell, BUT it is very different from the common conception of it. for example, we see it as a good thing -- a cleasning process -- and we don't think it lasts forever (that'd be quite cruel!).

They sleep until the resurrection (the rebirth of souls on judgment day).
