I just read a disturbing article saying that all who practice Islam are supposed to destroy what they referred to as "unbelievers". I can not believe this to be a fair representation of *all* Islamics, but I do not know enough about the religion to understand. What is true here?

I am Muslim ,and I can tell you that the Islam has many sectors
,these sectors have many differences among them ,but most of them do not allow to the follower even to hurt non Muslims by any way,yes you can find some sectors believes that Muslims should treat non Muslims in different way comparing with Muslims, but not destroying others or killing them as the extremists do or hurting anyone even animals .That's what we had learned and believed and mentioned in our holly book.
Many people thought the Koran are explained just by reading .This idea is totally wrong ,simply because the Koran is declared the no one can explain the Koran just God and ( who is
inveterate in science ) So just by reading the Koran do not give you any chance to understand even simple details about the legislations that could be established from it.
When you know that more than 4 sciences must be completed to begin understanding few things about the Koran, that could help you making a good vision about how complex the matter of
giving an opinion compatible with Koran .

In the Koran, there are many verses that say such things. It is Islam. Muslims in Western countries will not do such things, because they are not in control of the government. Here are a few verses:

verse 4:74 - "Let those who would exchange the life of this world for the hereafter, fight for the cause of Allah; whoever fights for the cause of Allah, whether he dies or triumphs, on him We shall bestow a rich recompense."

Verse 9:123 - "Believers, make war on the infidels who dwell around you."

Verse 47:3 - "When you meet the unbelievers in the battlefield strike off their heads and, when you have laid them low, bind your captives firmly."

Verse 48:29 - "Muhammad is Allah's apostle. Those who follow him are ruthless to the unbelievers but merciful to one another."

Verse 66:9 - "Prophet, make war on the unbelievers and the hypocrites, and deal sternly with them. Hell shall be their home, evil their fate."

verse 5:17 - "Unbelievers are those who declare: 'God is the Messiah, the son of Mary.'"

verse 5:51 - "Believers, take neither the Jews nor the Christians for your friends. They are friends with one another."

Verse 4:101 - "The unbelievers are your inveterate foe."

I've heard that that is what is said in the Koran, but it also says not to harm the "People of the Book". I am no expert in Islam. I have read only a little of the Koran.

The article was incorrect. They want to turn unbelievers to Allah, just like almost every other religion we know of.

They do want to destroy the Great Satan, however.

No it is not true. The only people we are allowed to destroy is "whoever that attack us first." The rest is propaganda!
[Quran 2.190] And fight in the way of Allah with those who fight with you, and do not exceed the limits, surely Allah does not love those who exceed the limits.
