Welcome to the world of breeding!!!!!!!!! You have to keep them on sheets or blankets for good footing. Newspaper is too slippery.
This is what breeders go through all the time. Puppies do not "sit still". They only get worse. Do not use heating pads. The puppies can get a bad burn.
Good and responsible breeders sleep next to the whelping box for 2-3 weeks for this very reason. The box is never out of our sight for more than a second. We may not leave the house for a month. That is just how it is. Otherwise you can lose several puppies to suffocation or from being crushed by the dam.

How could you possible expect 5 day old pups to sit still.? Take out the sheet!!!! Where is the mother? If they're in a warm room putting a heating pad in is a really bad idea - too easy to burn these pups.

They're probably trying to get away from the heating pad.

It's ok to use a heating pad, but they need an area where if they get too warm they can move off the heating pad.

Use a large plastic container with high sides. Lay down a towel first, put the heating pad down, then cover that with a towel. Have an area in the container that's not being heated.

Chances are the puppies do not need to be under a sheet or on top of a heating pad. Where is there momma? She knows what to do with them and will keep them warm.
I always put the momma dogs and puppies inside my bathroom with a small, plasitc, children's swimming pool. That helps to keep the puppies contained for the momma.
Puppies will never stay still for you, but they may be trying to move around because they are to hot. Pull the sheet out of there and put cloth place mats, or bathroom rugs in with them instead. My puppies have always done just fine with that.

Are they small breed or big breeds? I'm just wondering what size the area you keep them in... the best thing to do is buy baby blankets.... i lay a baby fleece blanket on top of the doggie bed... then i lay baby recieving blankets to the side or sometimes i'll cover them completely afraid they'd might be cold. They will know how to crawl out of the blanket if its too hot. They will also know how to crawl next to the blanket if they're cold. I'm not sure where you live but I live in the valley of california.... with so many people constantly in and out of the house... I actually have to lower the house temperature to about 79degrees or 80degrees (which is lower than the recommended temperature by other breeders)... with so many people in the house we give off body heat and the house gets too stuffy so the newborns whine or they won't stay still because its probly too hot to sleep. =)

wheres mommy?? she will keep them protected if shes around, but take the sheet out if you really have issues and put down some newspapers. They will be fine as long as they are confined and together they will keep eachother warm. GOOD LUCK!

they won't suffocate. but, i wouldn't put a heating pad in there with them. the mama dog is enough warmth for them, especially in the summer.

They are puppies. They won't. Are you an experienced breeder? It seems like you are not. If you have any questions, make sure you contact a vet.
