In order for the present human society to maintain an equilibrium necessary for survival, the following criteria must be present; 1)production - work in general needs to be done/product needs to be produced. 2) Procreation - the birth rate needs to keep ticking over. 3) Education - Offspring need to be taught the methods to maintain the previous 2 points.
Religion allows a means to ensure these 3 immensly important criteria are met as there are more people in the world with a comparatively low level of intelligence.
However, religion hinders progress because it's very nature contradicts that which grants humans their means to progress - science.
So, if the development of humans could be seen on a lineal graph with time on the horizantal, accumulated knowledge on the vertical, there would've been a exponential rise not long after the start, then a distinct almost flat line as mass religion came into being.
