in MODERN schools. Do we have the qualified staff to teach the subject?
I think the standard of spoken english is terrible among young people. I am not wanting 'posh' accents but understandable grammatical sentence structure. You hear apalling mistakes and bad grammar all the time.

Whacha talkin' about? I ain't be talkin' like that. Like, I think that everybody should talk however, like, you know, they wanna, cuz people can understand them anyway.

Honestly, yes, I think there is a problem with standard spoken English. At the same time, I am 18, and I get incredibly annoyed as a cashier when I have to "dumb down my English" for older Americans that also don't speak well.

"How are you?"
"Good" (The answer should be "well". People cannot be "good", but I don't want to offend anybody.)

"Which way does it go? This way, or this way?"
"The latter."
"Huh?"

I once got in a fight with a senior citizen because I said, "You do that better than I," and he insisted that I was just trying to sound smart by using improper English.

It is far from restricted to any particular age group. Tr;y listening to the radio, Virgin, one or Four, or watch presenters on TV, for kids or adults. Maybe if they brushed up on their English it wold have as greater effect as asking teachers to take on yet another responsibility.

I agree totally. Have you noticed that adverbs have nearly disappeared, with adjectives being used in their place?
For example:.. He did it quick... (instead of quickly).
He walked really slow... (instead of slowly).
He did it perfect.. (instead of perfectly)....etc. etc. etc.

There again, haven't standards in many walks of life deteriorated in the last 40 years?
