I was sideswiped by a delivery truck and in the process I got thrown to the sidewalk and hit a car that was parked on its driveway. Our problem was who was to shoulder damages incurred by the car that I hit. That's were recovery claim comes in.

Furthermore, the driver of the truck tried to runaway. People just stopped him from doing so.

Technically the truck driver's insurance should cover the whole thing. Also technically the owner of the car in the driveway can claim on your insurance since your car physically hit their car. This second technicality is where the recovery claim comes into play. If your insurance has paid or will pay for the car your car struck, then your insurance company or you can file a recovery claim on the amount paid out to the owner of the car in the driveway.

The "innocent" car can try to recover from either of you. Sometimes, insurance companies, because of a dispute, will pick up the innocent vehicle's damages and sort the rest of it out with the possible at fault person. The truck driver might not be owning up to fault, and the other car is just ready to get paid, and can go after either of you.

Your insurance company will pay for your damages to your vehicle, and they will try to get the money back from the driver that was responsible for the accident. In the event they get money from the driver that tried to run away, you will get your deductible back. It is called subrogation. If he has insurance, you will most likely get your money back but it may take a while. and if he lies, it will be much harder and much longer to get your $ back.
