If you have a very simple bankruptcy, it could be done by yourself.

But keep in mind that the bankruptcy attorneys specilized in these things, and have studied it for a long time. And even then they still managed to screw up the case.

But the ultimate reason to have an attorney do it.....if you mess up on any form, don't file the correct form, fail to follow a court rule or procedure, or goof up in any of a thousand areas....the trustee will immediately file for a dismissal. If that is done, you can not refile for one year. Now that you have given your creditors a clue of what you are doing, they will RUN to court and get a judgement started to collect whatever they can, as quickly as they can.

So the last thing you want is to have this thing messed up. Hire an attorney and have it done right.

It can be very, very complicated. Congress just gave credit card companies more rights under the new laws, and you will need to go to court if they challenge the amounts you are trying to write off. Also, if you have judgments against you this is very tricky. You also need to find out how the federal laws differ from the state laws, so you know which one to go under. Your state will usually be more generous to you than the federal guidelines.
