7-10 years, depending on which state you live in. California is 10 years.

Chapter 7 stays for 10 years. I think the confusion is coming about b/c Chapter 13 stays for 7 years. The reason for the shorter length of time with a chapter 13 is that in the 13, the debtor works with the companies to try and pay back some or all of the debt.

no if's ands or but's its definately 10 years. HOWEVER- this does in no way mean that you can not get credit. You will most likely have to pay higher interest than most, you will not be approved for large limits, and you will have to put 5-10 percent down on a mortgage of a house.
My chapt 7 will be discharged monday. The credit councelor told me the best thing to do to start rebuilding credit is to get a gas card and pay it off every other month. This will prove that you can pay it, AND that you can make the minimum payments on time. Dont have too many credit inquiries on your report as that looks bad to potential creditors. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY--- if you are looking to purchase a house, or a car you need to have PERFECT credit after the bankruptcy. No late payments on anything. Even your utilities can report your payment history, so best bet is to be on top of everything and act as if you never had a bankruptcy.
after time the chapter 7 will look less and less bad, as the good stuff piles up.
best wishes!
