Creationist Christians don't want to know. They are very happy in the snug little world of faith. Its really sad because you can't have a real and meaningful dialog with them because they have such a small view of the cosmos.
I have found when they do try and talk about anything to do with science it takes the form of paraphrasing something they read in a christian book or mag that has been thoroughly debunked years ago.
So it's kind of a lost cause.

I am a creationist Christian, and I know about astronomy. I don't think the universe is young, and I know plenty about it. I'm in an Astronomy class (stupid gen eds, I really don't need it cause I know most of it) at my conservative Christian college. Anyone with a brain can see that the universe is old, based on evidence both on Earth and scattered throughout the universe. Even the thing you mentioned, light getting to Earth, proves it's old, because the universe has to have existed for the amount of time it takes the light to get here. I.E. - if the universe is 15 billion years old (and I'm not saying it is, just for example), then we can't see any stars or whatever that's more than 15 billion light years away.
What I DON'T understand is why people start attacking Christians as knowing nothing when, as far as I know (and I should know, since I am one), we know just as much as anybody else. I'm sure there's plenty of people I know who know more about it than you even. BECAUSE of my faith, I have looked at stuff like that more indepth, not in spite of it. Maybe you could do a little research on what a particular group believes before making unfounded claims about how they "genuinely know absolutely nothing."
Most people don't do not believe the universe is young. There are many reputable Christian scientists (yes, there are such a thing) that could give you plenty of eveidence for a very old universe. What you're going off of is centuries old "research" of some guy that added up all the generations of the Bible in the geneologies listed and came up with something in the neighborhood of 4000 years. Any Christian who actually knows much about the Bible will tell you that the geneologies aren't complete, and they were never meant to be. They just show Jesus' ancestors to prove that he is descended from David, or trace a lineage back to Adam and Eve or what not. They show people of note and are constructed in a literary fashion, because, let's face it, the Bible is a piece of literature and therefore you can't take everything at face value. Just because the author of whatever portion of the Bible you're reading left off some generations because he felt they weren't relavent to make his point doesn't mean you can just add up those he put in to get the date of creation. Plus, who says the universe or Earth began when humans did?
And sorry about any spelling errors; the spell checker wasn't working. But at least I didn't call an entire group of people stupid.

Jane a good lesson in life is:
Just because something SEEMS that way, doesn't mean it always is.
I am a Christian and I do know alot about astronomy.
But man knows absolutely nothing about space. We can't even get past the moon. Everything we know about space, we tend to change or revise within the next 5-10 years.
All we know is theories. And most of our theories are based on upon measuring differences in light? And most of our theories are based off of pictures from a satellite?!?!?!
We are using PICTURES to base our knowledge off of something physical and distant and ever-changing? And who knows if those galaxies even exist anymore. We are basing our theories off of pictures from hundreds of millions of years ago? The universe could have changed ENTIRELY in its atomic composition and principles of energy and we would not know, and we could still be going on the way the universe acted when the DINOSAURS ROAMED THE EARTH!?!?
Any human, Christian or Atheist is a fool to believe the word of man.
In this day and age, Man is not fueled by the want to learn.
He is fueled by money and time and energy expelled.

When you end up in HELL then you will know that all your astronomy knowledge went to HELL with you and all your - so called intellect and wisdom that you say that you have achieved and learned, but doesn't change a damn thing about you, cause when you wake up and look at the mirror you will still be seeing an individual going to HELL, God said: For all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God and we need a saviour which is through Jesus Christ and if and when you do reject HIM you will still be going to HELL knowing that you read this as well!!! what a waste of time and knowledge, get a life through Jesus!

Do you believe Jesus was the co-Creator of the universe as it says in John's gospel (chapter 1)? Then surely you would not say he knows nothing of astronomy, right?
Well, Jesus said this: "From the Beginning of Creation God made them male and female".
So if they were male & female from the beginning of creation, then surely Jesus believed in 6 literal days of Creation as recorded in Genesis.
Now since the entire geneology from Adam to Jesus is recorded in Scripture (you can look it up) and with the ages of each generation; surely Scripture teaches , along with Jesus, that the world is only 6 or 7 thousand years old.
Now it seems to me you are questioning Jesus and God's Word simply because of something you learned in a college class ..
Are you aware that the 'billion years theory' of earth existance has only been popular in the last 100 years... no one before that ever thought differently from the bible ....rather they understood exactly what the bible teaches...that the created universe is only a few thousand yrs. old.
It is evident from Scriture that Jesus also believed that.....and to be safe ...I would not want to be the one to call him a liar.

****Why does it seem that creationist Christians know nothing about Astronomy? ****
Because they're too busy creating stuff.
Actually Christians know plenty about astronomy. How to square the six days of creation with the apparent ancient age of the cosmos is the problem. To each their own. Let folk believe what they will. As long as it's no skin off of my nose ,no problem.

Why does it take so long for the light of the stars to reach earth? For the simple reason they are so far away. The age of the universe has nothing to do with it.

Because you did not do your homework.
Two watches one worn enough that it hardly works anymore, the second as if it left the factory yesterday, which one is older? And did someone really build them?
The state of things don't mean ANYTHING if you can come up with another explanation as to why it is.

You could have stopped at "Creationist know nothing..."
Just look at the first response you received. Typical....if you dont worry about it, dont think about it, and dont quesiton it, it doesnt matter! What a great idea! Lets bury our heads in the sand and ignore the evidence...
