If it's only one nostril, then I'd suspect a foreign body. An allergy would be a bilateral problem (both sides)

It can be expensive getting those things out. If he inhaled a foxtail (grass awn), it could be working its way through his tissues and could end up as a massive infection.

If he is sensitive about his head, that speaks further for his sense of discomfort. If you have a way to do this, take him to a vet clinic and have the vet check him out. Some dogs will fight this and need some anesthesia, that's why it can get expensive. :(

It could be any number of things, from allergies or upper respiratory infection to an obstruction. If the discharge is clear then there probably isn't any infection present yet, indicating allergy or obstruction. However, any of these issues need to be tended to by a vet. If you knew for certain what the problem was then you could possibly treat it at home, but I wouldn't recommend it. Anything that happens with a dogs nose can become quite serious and cause lots of other problems. The way dogs work...well their nose and their sense of smell is crucial to their ability to function in the world.
Sorry bud, you gotta call the vet. Maybe it just will be allergies and you can give him a daily dose of some infant strength Benydryl until the seasons change. Your vet will determine if an OTC is appropriate for your dog and will recommend the right dose, if it is allergies.
Good luck.

that happened to my dog once. It lasted about 9 days and I was ready to take him to the vet, and he sneezed and a huge dead ground beetle came out of his nose. I know, I know, gross but it's true. He must have sniffed it up there when he was outside. I took him to the vet anyway and they said he was fine and did not need medicine or anything.

Sounds like maybe he has allergies. Call your vet to find out the correct dosage of benadryl for him. Also, when it's stopped up you can put him in the bathroom and run the hot water. Just like with people, this will help open up his passage ways.
