How are we going to test new drugs to see if they have potentially adverse side-effects on human beings without testing it on animals.

Tissue tests and engineered organ tests are some of the alternatives. However the truth of the matter is animal testing is an essential part of medicine. Animal testing is not conducted until all other tests have been conducted and the substance is proven to be acceptable for animal testing.
Scientists are not mad and determined to mutilate animals for the hell of it…… they only test when they have to!

there probably never will be an alternative. Animal research is in its own sense a theoretical model, but any model which aims to mimic the human body is going to have flaws. I do not agree with the arguments that animal testing cannot or should not be used. Yes, it's morally wrong but people are still gonna do it so we must face up to it. Human testing is one of the last stages of drug development, after animal testing. Humans are used, but at their own choice and when the potential extreme dangers have been eliminated through animal testing (although not always the case) only then will the testing be passed onto humans. I don't think many people would agree to testing if these priors tests on animals had not been carried out...

where i'm going with all this I don't know but there ya go!

How are we going to test new drugs for side effects on animals without first testing them on human beings.

Right now there is no substitute for animal research, unfortunately. Those other methods only take us so far, which isn't nearly far enough, and some research simply can't be conducted on humans for ethical reasons that do not apply to lab rats (this is the law, not necessarily what is right). Right now, animal research is necessary.

at present, the only alternative to animal researchis this: forget all about new drugs for cancer, serious infections such as malaria and abandon hope.

Hopefully in around 50 or a hundred year's time computer modelling may be up to the task, but for now forget it.

I don't believe anyone would support continuing animal tests for cosmetics, though, would they?

Testing on the Animal rights protesters and if they don't agree ban them form any drug that has been tested on animals in the past! Lets see how much they love a farm bred rat then.

Human research. Would you rather we first test new drugs on animals or humans?

human research!!!

and we all heard about that on the news a few months ago.

outside of that there is guess work!

there is a place for animal testing in medicine but i don't think it should even be considered as an option with cosmetics.

Extend our theoretical models so that they model the human body more precisely. This unfortunately is extraordinarily hard, and likely won't be achieved in our lifetime to an extent that allows us to determine side effects of drugs.

The other method is simply to test on humans.
