I've left my dog in the car with the windows partially open on cooler summer days or evenings. I know that I'll only be in for a few minutes, and I don't forget that my dog is in the car. She hasn't ever had a problem with being left in the car.
If I saw a dog in obvious distress (panting, drooling, etc) I would note the license plate, make and model of the car, and report it to the store's manager, so they could page the owner.
If I didn't know where the owner was, I would call animal control or the police.
Don't break the window to get the dog out. It's still vandalism, no matter what your intentions. If I came out of the store and found my window broken by some well intentioned but misguided person, I would be very upset and would press charges.
Hope this helps!

I called the cops. This happened a few years ago. I was going into a Kmart and saw a dog baking in the car. I started to drive to a restaurant to use their phone and lo and behold there was a squad patrolling the parking lot. I waved to him and he stopped. When I explained the situation, the officer was livid. I gave a description, location of the car, and a license number. By the time I got back and found a place to park, the cop had found the car. When I walked into the store, I could hear them calling the person to return to their car immediately.
Don't ever be afraid to get involved. If you're afraid of repercussions, it can be done anonymously. The police can't stand animal neglect or cruelty any more than any other person who loves animals.

This happened to me just last week. A lady had left her beautiful lab puppy in her truck while she went shopping. Fortunately, she left the window down just enough that I was able to get the puppy out. As he was crying loudly and was already dehydrated. I sat in my own car with the a/c going with the puppy and waited for the owner. A few other people who had seen this called the police and then went back into the store and had them make an announcement. It was a younger girl, maybe 19ish, that claimed she had no idea it got to hot for her dog in the car. She received a citation for it though. Fortunately this story had a happy ending!
People need to just leave their pets at home if they are not going to be in the car the entire time with the dog!

I totally agree and I think the dog should be taken out and the person made to sit in the car with a heavy winter coat on for as long as they made the dog sit there to roast before they're hauled off to jail!
My dogs go almost everywhere with us.And there have been occasions when they were forced to stay in the car while one or the other of us has run an errand. We crack the back windows only about an inch in case of an exhaust leak and leave the car running with air on so they're comfortable.Car is also child-proof so they cannot accidentally put it in gear while it's running.
You would'nt believe how many people have made rude comments about how we're wasting gas and helping poison the environment and how ashamed of ourselves we should be.
I've been stopped on my way into a store to grab a loaf of bread and accused of animal abuse for leaving them by well meaning people who don't realize my car is running.
Seems you can't please everyone.
But to anyone reading this. Please call the police immediately if you see an animal stuck in a car BEFORE it gets over-heated.

If there is AC on inside the vehicle and the dog does not seem to be in distress, you do nothing.
I agree if a dog is inside a vehicle even with the windows cracked, temps inside the vehicle can reach over 100 degrees in a matter of minutes. Call 911, in our county, the police will break the window to retrieve the dog, then issue a violation to the owner.

Oh that is so messed up. If I could reach the pet I would rescue it myself and call the local PD. or take it to the local shelter so that person can either pay a fine to get it back, or maybe the Dog would get lucky and be adopted out to someone with some sense. I would love to put that person in that car, just like he did his pet. Oh PEOPLE like that really make me upset. Thank you for your posting. It is a very important one.

Finally someone who is smart and has common sense!!! What I would do is tell the owner that their dog is baking in the car and if I couldn't find the owner than I would call the cops and have them say a little something to them.

If you see a dog in distress, you call the police and/or SPCA/Humane Society/etc. If the dog dies, they can be criminally charged. Just be sure to make a complaint against the person, so there is a paper trail.

Call the police. Stay with the dog, and if you see signs of heat exhaustion, break the window IF you are willing to face charges for it.
