Yes definitely. Counselling can do some good but it just helps you learn to live with it more successfully rather than getting rid of it. I'm a trained counsellor and a student social worker. There's only so much they can do, such as teach coping strategies and referring to other professionals. Maybe think about a support group of some kind. I hope this helps, contact me if there's anything I can do.

Yes, I believe that guilt over a childhood incident could haunt you for the rest of your life.
But you can change the shape of the guilt and how you react to these bad memories. A professional (psychiatrist, psychologist, social worker/counselor) can teach coping skills. They can also analyze your situation objectively and help you understand that you were just a child. Children are not capable of controlling events and people.
It is awful going through life feeling guilty. You don't have to suffer because there are so many good therapists that can help. The hardest thing to do sometimes is to take the leap, make an appointment with a stranger, and tell them your secrets.
I hope that with help, you can get past this haunting guilt .

Time to let go. We forgive other people and forgive ourselves. Life is short and precious, too short and precious to hold on to old worries and guilts and grievances. Life is not a dress rehearsal. This is it - the real thing. Don't let it slip by worrying about stuff you cannot change and most likely had no control over at the time.
Yesterday is history, tomorrow's a mystery, but today is a gift. That's why we call it the present.
If you can't let go of this on your own, talk to someone you trust - clergy, counselor, doctor, etc.
Take care and enjoy life. That's why we have it.

It can haunt you if you allow it to do so. Talk it out with yourself or someone else you trust.
Is your screen name "Give God a chance?" Why don't you then? Putting behind me the former things, I press toward the mark of the high calling in Christ Jesus! Read Psalm 51 and 1st Peter 5:6-7.
Finally, do what Maya Angelou recommends, each night before sleeping forgive yourself the evils of the day, promise to do better tomorrow and strive to do it! Hope this gives you a measure of peace.

Yes it can. You are carrying unecessary gult. Over something that you could have prevented, you say. You know, I think we can all agree on a few things. Whether or not you COULD HAVE prevented, you didn't. It happened. It's not your fault, you were a child. Imagine a similar incident happening today to a child to may be familiar with. Would you hold it against him or her? They are a child, regardless of the moral implications they are innocent. You probably feel they should be shown mercy.
You need to feel, and to show, that same mercy to yourself. Please do that for yourself. You can't be held accountable for things that you are not cognitively able to handle.
You're okay, leave your behind in the past, uh I mean leave your past behind you.

It can BUT - you were a child with a child's reasoning. The guilt you feel is that of an adult with 20/20 hindsight.
You need to get over it and move on.
If you hurt someone - ask forgiveness and tell them it bothers you. That is the best way to get over it.

Life's too short to be looking in the past..........Tell someone you can trust all about it, talking about situations can help all the muddled up thoughts in your head seem clearer..Then move on
Good Luck.

If you let yourself get eaten by it. Counselling helps those things but you can get over it. Remember that you are/were young and didn't know any better.
