I know there are some really nice non-religious people who don't believe in God, Religion, the Bible or whatever. Some of these people are also bright intelligent academics, but their commonsense and logic seems to fail them completely when questioned about why they don't believe. They seem to give up logic for mere mockery and insults.

Not all of the "bright intelligent academics" resort to mockery and insults. Maybe some do, but some definitely don't. For the record, I don't believe because I see no evidence that a god exists. It has nothing to do with mockery.

I used to go to church like sheep matching to a slaughter house when I was a kid. Even studied the Bible and read the whole thing cover to cover several times which is more than most so call Christians have done.
Now I am convince religion is the biggest business scam. It sells a product (eternal life) that you will not receive until you die, yet you have to pay for it throughout your life. I got a product like that for you too. I only need 1% (instead of 10%) of your yearly income and in exchange of that, you will receive the product after you die. Any taker out there?
You see how ridiculous it sounds. Think hard about your so call religion. The Bible is supposed to be a historical account written with a lots of bias and contradicting views from the authors. I suppose, it is easy to believe than to question it due to the laziness of our human mind.

"their commonsense and logic seems to fail them completely when questioned about why they don't believe"???
I've yet to meet one of those...
I willingly saw the light simply through research, my friend. Research into the religion I was a part of. If the church didn't do such a good job of discouraging people(especially children)from actually looking into the roots of their beleifs, there would be far less christians around indeed.
WILL: I point you to your first answer to this question, regarding insults as retorts to christian attacks. They stated my meaning perfectly, so I see no reason to elaborate further. I have been here many months, as you know, I'm sure.

No, I became an atheist because of a lack of any gods. I never had a bad experience with religion when I was a Christian. I just looked into my beliefs and realized there are no gods.
I haven't met many atheists who's logic fails when questioned about their lack of belief. Most I know love a good discussion about religion. I have met many who are frustrated with believer's lack of logic and reason.
Most of them I know only give up logic for mere mockery and insults when the believer has already resorted to verbal attacks. Most people don't enjoy conversing with those who just attack them. It's also difficult to discuss things with people who just don't get concepts and can't hold a conversation.

I just started asking questions. Most religious people don't even question God's existence. I did, and found that it could not be explained by logic. Faith is a key word here: I don't have it, religious people do.
I'm not sure what you mean by giving up logic for mockery and insults. I would say we act more upon logic as opposed to faith.

I based my non-belief only what I have read in many fields including theology, sociology, psychology, anthropology, science & humanities. I made the final decision based upon what i read; although I did talk to professors at various universities to try to see things from all angles.
Is it possible I could be wrong; yes but then so could a believer. My thoughts and my beliefs are for me only and I expect no one else to follow them. We each should make our own path.
There is no need for insults and mockery either way. It is a big world with room for many different beliefs.

I became agnostic atheist because I picked up commonsense and logic. How is religion logical?
What's the meaning of life? To serve God.
How did life begin? God created life.
Who created God? God has always been.
Where do the passed go? To Heaven/Hell.
How do you know God exists? Because, I have faith.
None of those answers are logical. Someone please, answer those questions logically.

No I became an atheist because of the bigotry and phoniness of the churches, not to mention I learned to read and read books on various things that can be proved beyond all Doubt such as evolution, medical studies that prove people are born gay and transgendered and that there is a vast amount of good that comes from diversity.

I didn't become an athiest I was born that way. I question what I can't see thereby using logic and reason to get passed the idea that I need to make up something bigger than myself to validate my existance. I don' t believe in the easter bunny or santa clause or the tooth fairy either, but not mock what you believe in.
