I know there are some really nice religious people who believe in God, Religion, the Bible or whatever. Some of these people are also bright intelligent academics, but their commonsense and logic seems to fail them completely when questioned about why they believe. They seem to give up logic for blind faith.

I find it extraordinary that otherwise nice bright intelligent people are unable to explain meaningfully why they believe, other than to repeat quotes from historical religious documents (like the Bible) as if they were fact, or just say they have faith and that’s why they believe.

If these same people were presented a Scientific Instruction Manual which contained as many anomalies, speculation, conjecture, and unproven facts as the Bible, they would tear it to pieces in no time at all as being fake.

There seems to be a mental association in the minds of religious people that connects fear of the unknown (like fear of the dark) if they openly doubt their religious beliefs.

No matter how inteligent or centered a person seems on the outside, the simple fact that they follow an organized religion tells you that they are either fearful, weak-minded, or both on the inside.

That being said, keep in mind that many of the things we are taught to believe in the scientific community are still just educated guesses--- the big bang theory is still just a theory. So it takes blind faith to believe much that we take for granted just like religious believers. It doent, however take fear and weak-mindedness.

Analyze your own mind please. I don't know how others think and it doesn't matter to me how they rationalize their own righteousness. Self righteousness it the real villain. People who sit around thinking how they are more correct are like drunks on a bar stool conducting international affairs with a bottle.
People subscribe to all kinds of philosophies, their own and others. What right do you have to criticize them?
Are you better? Smarter? You can't live a life from a book. So, what do you know? Faith is a good thing. Blind faith is powerful. Many people have no access to scientific method, and they wouldn't use it for moral and religious views if they did because they have common sense.
The Bible and most other scriptures of the worlds religions are fable and fiction. There are great lessons within the scriptures. Don't put people down or assume you know what they believe. Isn't it sweet enough that people have the free right to practice their beliefs without Hitler, Stalin, dictators and tyrants telling others what they should believe and to be faithless.
You are borderline with a tyrant. I don't care about the ten points, but if you had common sense you would look into faith, belief, and how prayer works. It's not just coincidence, prayer works within each cell of your body. Give it a sincere test and don't let your mind block the process.

I find it extraordinary that people don't believe in God and can't seem to grasp the concept of faith. I also am amused that people can take one person they know or have seen on TV and say that every Christian is exactly like that person. They probably wouldn't stereotype anyone else that way. I'm not saying you are stereotyping by one person, it's obvious from your question that you aren't. We know Jesus. We don't just read the Bible like any other book and then quote from it and that's all there is. We actually have very real experiences with Jesus and his Holy Spirit. We can feel the presence of God. I read the questions from people who haven't had this experience yet and I just wish that they had, hope that they will. Then they'd understand. Until that happens they won't understand and whatever we say they'll think we have some sort of mental problem, and that's okay! I have Jesus and that's the most important thing in my life. I wish you well and hope the best for you. (-:

Then you are not ready to believe. Faith is the answer whether you can accept it or not. Religious people are not the same as believers in the faith. Religious people feel they must do many things. Believers believe and follow the Word. Doubting religion is good. Some practices need to be examined- they are man made, not of God. I do not doubt God. I just believe and time after time He has shown me I should. He has made a way out of no way and it looked like I was down for the count or that something could not happen and it did. Only God could orchestrate that. I have no idea where you came up with "scared you will be punished after you die if you doubt your religion." Who says?

Sounds like your Mother had to explain to you that toys were made by people instead of elves.

Why rush to yell to all the world that Santa is dead.

What if they choose to believe he will visit them for Christmas.

By the way........I have seen his workshop,
and I believe!

Faith is a belief in things that are true but which are not seen.

Is this a bad thing?

If you atheists don't believe and don't care, then why do you always question us and ridicule us. If you're that curious then just go to church once, it won't kill you and it won't waste anymore time than asking on this site. If we try to teach you or talk to you about it, you say we're forcing our religion on you. So really, why are you even asking if in the end you don't care what we have to say?

Most of them are. When I've told people that I'm an atheist, I've often seen a sticken look on their faith. I felt so sorry for them. I wanted to laugh, but it would have been cruel.
