hi i am not british but i grew up in a country that was under british rule so i pretty much understand the structure of british english versus american english. the truth is the british spell certain words differently from americans so of course they pronounce them differently. i have always known the word as " aluminium" (ah-loo-mi-nee-um) with an "ium" at the end and that is how i pronounce it also.

Because it DOES have an 'ium' at the end, and WE pronounce it right!! Just because YOUR country thought it was too difficult for Americans to pronounce with the 'i' before the 'um' does NOT make you right!!
The fact that your stupid president pronounces 'nuclear' as 'new-cue-lar' does NOT make your country superior ... far from it...! I think that your country has to 'dumb down' the yokels so that you don't notice how unbelievably stupid your leaders are...!!
But you already KNOW all this - otherwise you would have accused us of pronouncing it 'al-you-minny-um' instead of spelling it the CORRECT English way..! Maybe you ARE English, and you're just having a dig at the Americans...??!

When the element was first discovered, it was given the same "ium" suffix as many other metals (sodium, potassium, calcium, etc.) However, Americans found it too difficult to pronounce (just like Mr Bush and his "nooclear").

considering its spelled aluminIUM there is an "ium" at the end and considering its the spelling in the ENGLISH language i don't think its the english who are saying it wrong.
Americans are the ones who keep modifying the language and changing pronounciations.

The americans pronounce it incorrectly. Probably because they are too busy nicking other countries oil.
