If you think you will have the money soon, there are ways to keep the repo man from taking your vehicle. But, you would have to be very vigilant.
The person who does the repossession "cannot" break the peace. If the vehicle in your garage, behind a locked gate etc, the repo man cannot break into the garage or break the lock on the fence or anything else that would be considered breaking the peace.
If the repo man does manage to grab the car and you see him doing it, you can legally tell him to stop - even if he already has it loaded up. He MUST stop, by law, and go away without the vehicle.
If the repo man does get away with your car, you are allowed by law to redeem the vehicle. You would have to pay the full amount that they will request, which would include any repo fees.
Have you spoken with the creditor and explained your situation? If not, you should.
+++++++++++++++
Sharon..........I'm sorry that you are so uninformed. You, and everyone else "in your part of the country" can stand there with their thumbs up their butts while the repo man takes their cars...........BUT.........
Federal and state law TRUMPS "any and all" lienholders claim if the repo man breaches the peace !!
If the repossession agent seizes a vehicle over the vehicles owners objections while the vehicle owner is standing there, or by using force or threats, or by breaking into a locked garage, he has breached the peace. It is considered an unlawful repossession.
(meaning the creditor should not keep the car or collect a deficiency. It also means that the creditor may owe you money.)
If that happens and the vehicle owner files because of it, the repo man and the creditor will soon quit "laughing".
Also, filing bankruptcy for a $1000 debt is bad advice, the bankruptcy fees will cost more than the $1,000 debt.

WishICouldTellU, I'm sorry your brother has bladder problems.
Perhaps your brother should put down his comic books and do some FTC reading instead (and you also Sharon). If he finds it to confusing, he should find someone to explain it to him. After all, he should KNOW the laws if he does the job.
++++++++++++++++
Sharon and WishICouldTellU's brother...........both of you must be soooo proud that you think your "opinions" are better than the FTC.
sheesh...................

File for bankruptcy, this will stop collections and the repo. It will buy you some time and if you can get your finances cleaned up before the court date, you can cancel the BK and pay the companies you owe money to. If you go through with the bankruptcy you can still keep the car in most cases and start making your payments again. Good Luck!

Echo happens to be correct.
Sorry Sharon and Wish, but I also agree with Echo's advice about reading the FTC. It sure sounds like Echo has.
Oh, and to Wish's brother, one day you may try to repo someones car that knows their rights. Believe me when I say that you, your company and the company that contracts you could be facing a law suit if you breach the peace and take a vehicle over the owners objections. One can only hope that day will come soon since the one that will fall the hardest would be the one who broke the law. You don't think the companys will take the blame do you?

Honestly, at that age, not much you do or say can affect her. She will probably not fully grasp the consequences of her actions and how it negatively affects everybody else until she is much older. Most likely, she is acting out for attention or acceptance. You could try spending more one-on-one time with her. It sounds like she doesn't have a mother-figure in the house and that may be what she is seeking. She also seems to have a need to have more personal connections. She may get jealous of other people who are close and this is why she tries to break up other people's relationships. If you scorn her for doing this, she will probably act out in another way. All you can do is just accept her. Also, make sure the other adults understand the situation so they don't get caught up in the mess. Don't accuse her of lying, but she she does lie, just say "ok" and do your best to accept her for who she is. I have friends who I know exaggerate greatly, but I can still enjoy their friendship.

Bankruptcy will halt collections, but only file if you are truly that far in the hole. Novice's suggestion would work if $1000 is the total you owe. If you a $1000 behind on a larger loan, no one will loan you the $1000. You could ask the bank to refinance to entire loan. If that doesn't work, there is probably no way to save the car.

Maybe where you live, but in this part of the country, the repo man would laugh and leave WITH the vehicle. He has the lienholders PERMISSION to take the vehicle. You can stand there and tell him to stop all you want ... he isn't there to take orders from you.
Honey, it's the BANK that actually wants your car ... not the repo man. He's just the guy sent to get it for them. Explain your situation to someone with decision making power at the bank and make weekly payment arrangements until you are caught up. They really do want their money more than they want your extremely used car.
Ask the father of your children for the money or apply for a loan.
It's rough, but you can do it.

Nice try, but you are the one with your thumb up your butt.
Please point out exactly where I said it is ok for a repo man to "breach the peace". It must be in magic letters that are only visible on your screen, because neither I nor anyone else can see where I said it's ok for a repo man to breech the peace (probably because I didn't).
"If the repossession agent seizes a vehicle over the vehicles owners objections while the vehicle owner is standing there"
Thats not breech of peace. Breech of peace is pretending to be a cop in order to intimidate someone into getting out of their vehicle in order to repo it, breaking into someones garage to get at the vehicle, threatening violence, physically removing someone from their vehicle, etc
A repo man can take you car in the mall parking lot, off the street, etc and a zillion other places over all your "objections".
I'm sorry that you are so uninformed.

You can go to the bank to apply for a long-term car loan. With the current low rate, you can pay this $1000 loan in five years, you would pay only around $20 a month. I hope that this will be feasible for you and get you through this difficult time.
