Cognitive-Behavioral therapy is the best remedial approach. Medication can be used as a moderating treatment. This means, it should be used only initially if the condition prevents the child from making gains through cognitive-behavoural therapy.
You need a referral to a psychologist. Your local MD operates from a medical model and the goal will be only to medicate. Not a long-term solution on its own.

This is an easy one! Forget standard Meds for this cause
they are too dangerous. Like killing a fly with a bomb!
The answer is Vervain a herb that increases Oxygen to the brain, Lack of Oxygen can cause deficit disorder.
Vervain is also recommend for those that need alertness
if they Have to Drive after drinking. Don't get me wrong
I don't recommend driving after drink. Even an Alert drunk's reflexes will be slower than normal. If Vervain
can make a drunk alert it sure should be able to help one
with deficit order! Vervain has only one known side effect too much will cause Insomnia which can be solved
with Valerian

There's a chiropractor who has a radio show on Saturdays, a Dr. Bittiker, (I think he's in the Tampa Bay area in Florida) who states that attention deficit disorder (and a lot of other things) can be helped by eating certain vitamins and minerals. Check the internet for alternative treatments.

Your doctor (more specifically a psycologist since ADD has to be diagnosed by a behavioral psycologist) can recommend medication but be wary that these drugs are class 4 drugs that can change the child's behavioral temperament. I know someone who would would be able to work and concentrate better using ridelan (sp?) but would get so angry and temperamental. I know this sounds unorthodox, but I would recommend giving the child a little caffeine. Not to much mind you, but a 1/3 cup of green tea, black tea, coffee. Try not to give him sugar especially refined sugar.

I guess I'd have to ansewer you question witha question.. back in the early 50"s or 60's what prescription drug was used to treat this same disorder? Nothing? so my ansewer would be nothing? Try another alternative. Patients and your time would probably be the best medicine for this child. Not a drug.

My daughter was diagnosed with ADD (it runs in the family), and we chose to work on behavioral modification, instead of raising a kid on drugs.
She has learned to make lists that help her keep her stuff straight. I have learned that I can't lock the car, unless I am looking at the keys in my hands.
All of us have things in our lives that detract from our ability to be 100% all the time...we just have to learn about ourselves, and find ways to work around them or minimize the problems.

Check with your pediatrician, there is a fairly new medication out that is not a "triplicate" type - something that can easily be refilled and is not a stimulant. Check out Strattera. Best wishes =)
