The best time to cut is when you give them a bath. Like that the nail is soft. And remember the you can't cut to far than the quick. If not the nail will bleed. If you feel uncomfortable doing it take it to the vet or groomer.

sometimes dogs give their owners a hard time about their nails. alot of dogs are very sensitive about their feet. most of the time the dog will let a groomer or a vet clip their nails with no problem. i can't explain it.
it also helps to cut big nails after a bath, the water softens them up and its easier to slice.
but its true not to go too far down, the general rule of thumb is to only cut off the tips.
if the dogs nails are clear you can see the quick(the blood vessel) inside, so make sure you don't cut into that. if the nail is dark just start cutting off slivers and look at the crosssection of the nail, you will see a spot where the blood vessel gets bigger. then you know not to cut any further.
it might help to relax your dog, get down on the floor and rub his belly, talk softly then very gently (but quickly) start trimming them.
taking your dog for lots of walks on concrete will help file them away as well. i almost never have to trim my dogs nails because of all the walking we do.

He's very nervous because he's not used to it. Get him to lay on his side, hold his paw gently, talk to him soothingly, and for a few times, just pretent to cut. Hold the clippers right at his nail, and let him get used to the sound the clippers make. When he's calmed a bit to this, then you can cut just a sliver off of a nail or two. Depending on how he reacts, you might be able to do all 4 feet, but if not, be patient and do just a couple of nails at a time.
It may also help just to handle his paws when you're not going to clip his nails. Some dogs are very sensitive to having their paws handled. Just be patient and you should be ok.

Have them clipped on the vets 3 or 4 circumstances and purchase a pair of an identical clippers the vets use. Many dogs vendors are on ingredient while they shrink, or attempt to shrink, their canines nails. the two they're hectic approximately reducing too lots off - extremely if the dogs has black nails - or they're uncertain approximately coping with the clippers and spend see you later fiddling around the dogs gets under pressure or scared. I shrink the two my canines nails' with little concern. i exploit an identical clippers as are in use at my vets, those are what i could call the scissor/plier type clipper, no longer the guillitine type. the particular sort has slightly chrome steel shield/returned plate at the back of one ingredient which makes it speedy and secure. The nail wont bypass previous the returned plate so which you would be able to no longer shrink too lots off inadvertently. you shrink in line with probability a million/8th of an inch off at a time and that i haven't drawn blood yet with those. that's a case of little and in many circumstances. in case you enable the claws advance too long that's a protracted drawn out corporation to get them effectively returned to a quick length.

My Dog Does This.. He's A Fairly Big Dog So It Takes More The One Person To Hold Him Down. Try Sweet Talking Him And Taking His Mind Off Of His Nails Then Clip Them. I Guess It Depends On What Kinda Dog You Have. Good Luck. :]

Have you ever tried filing them?
My dog is petrified of me when I pick up nail clippers, runs and hides. We took her to the vet to get it done, was quite cheap and have also had a groomer do it. But it is much easier to use the file. She just sits there for me, thinking she is being cuddled. You can buy pet nail files form a pet store, or just use the ones from a hardware store as they are the same.

Alot of dogs don't like their nails to be clipped..Try having two people holding the dog and maybe that would work or take him to the vet to do them

take him to the groomer and ask them if you can watch and show you pointers on what to do for clipping them yourself. Especially if they have black nails. My dogs have the same problem and i should probably follow my own advice!

my dog would scream like a banshee if i got the nail clippers near him. i wouldn't even touch him and you'd think i was beating him. i took him to the vet. you should take him to the vet and let them do it. its cheap and the dog associates this unplesant thing with the vet and not you.
