This is the 2nd time asking a question about my 11mo. old male dachsund. When I first left him in the house alone he chewed up the carpet. I purchase a baby gate and he chewed thru that. I purchase a metal cage, he got the door open. I padlocked the door and he got the bottom pan out, lifted the heavy cage with his nose and squeezed thru. I returned that and got a plastic carrying crate, yes, he was able to use his nose to open that too. (Between the metal cage and the plastic carrying crate he now has a bloody snout I am nursing!) I decided to try leaving him outside and thought this is working great until today when my hard of hearing neighbor came over to tell me he has been howling all day. I am a stay-at-home mom but do need to get the kids to school and run errands. What can I do! I'm running out of ideas!!
Do the training collars work for howling?? Any GOOD ideas would be appreciated!

OK, let me make myself a little clearer. We take the dog for walks all the time. We play with him all the time. He has alot of toys. The metal cage I got was from Petsmart and it too had a metal bottom but after he pushed the pan out he lifted the cage with his snout and wiggled out of the bottom holes in the cage. He had a bloody snout which I am now nursing. He gets plenty of love and playtime.

I decided to try the pet gate so I purchase one yesterday at Petsmart. It has metal mesh so I knew he couldn't chew thru it. I set it up in the kitchen so he would have plenty of space, left food & water, toys, treats, blanket, etc. I set my video camera up so I could see what he does while I'm gone. Right away he started crying and howling, scratching at the floor in attempt to dig his way out, and pacing. He never once layed down to rest or played with his toys. At least I know he can't escape from the kitchen now.

He's totally bored. Find new activities for him to do, excersize him, keep his mind stimulated, spend time with him. If you can't spend the time with him that he needs then you should really consider finding him a home that can. It is not doing the dog, or you, any good to keep him like this.
Another option would be to put him in doggy daycare during the day. He will be able to burn off a lot of energy that way playing with other dogs and people.
And yet another option is obedience training.

Hello, I own a little girl mini doxie and she is just about 6 months old. I have never had a problem with her trying to get out but it sounds like you dont have the right crate....my crate i got from Pet Smart. It does have a plastic pan in the bottom, but even if she somehow manages to push it out, the crate continues on the bottom, and there would be no way your 11 month old would be able to fit his body through....
http://www.petamenities.com/dog_crates.htm
that crate has a metal chew proof bottom so i'm sure your puppy couldn't get through that.....
*always make sure he's not thirsty or hungry b4 you leave
*always make sure he has a lot of rubber, non-destructible toys
*give him a big rawhide or bone to chew on that will keep him busy for as long as you are gone
*try putting a blanket over his cage when you go out (it would always calm my pup down)
*I bought a "mama bear" which is a stuffed animal with a heart beat in it which calms them down...made mine fall right to sleep!
Just make sure he ALWAYS has something to chew on and play with....as for the training collars, i've never used them on any dogs i've ever had, and dachshunds tend to need to be with someone 24/7 or else they whine and cry so there is only so much you can do. you can try the collar if you want, it may help if all else fails!
Good luck!
----i started taking my doxie to obedience classes and it's really helping her calm down...she's crazy.
and PLEASE dont give him away, i almost did that to my puppy and believe me, you'll really regret it!! Don't give up and be consistant!!

I have two doxies. A little girl and a little boy. At first I only had a little girl. She hated it when I went to work and howled and scratched the door. The vet recommended I get wiener #2. They are good buddies now. They play together and nap together all day. The behavior is much better now. If you get another doxie, get a girl so they get along better.
Also, if you want to try games, here is great one for doxies:
I leave my doxies in the house and go in the backyard and bury treats. Be sure to do it where you don't mind him digging. Could even be in a field near your home. Then let him lose he will love finding the treat and digging it back up. Sometimes my doxies will even go find another spot and re-bury them. They'll come back later and dig it up again.
If you find your doxie enjoys this game, you could look into getting him involved in field trial competitions. http://www.akc.org/events/field_trials/d...
Have fun.
Also, the collars do work for howling as well as barking.

My 1st doxie was only 6 wks old when I brought him home. I never had problems with him chewing on things probably because I had cats in the house and he had them for company when I left. They are a very stubborn breed and once their mind is made up, there isn't much hope for changing it. Since they were breed to burrow into the ground, your boy has that instinct in him and that is what he is doing with the crate/cage. I would suggest obedience classes and perhaps getting a playmate for him. Good Luck

My girl jumped right over the baby gate after chewing AND SWALLOWING quite a bit of carpet from the threshold. I like the idea of weighing down the crate and also maybe leave a radio or TV on for the separation anxiety.
