But you can abuse a scientific idea till your blue in the face? (And this should often be encouraged for everyones sake - peer review can always be stricter.) Seriously, why can't we do the same to religion?

DETAIL - Abuse / criticism in genera - not surely yahoo - towards science & not religion. I don’t understand how religion is protected, but religion has free reign over its critic f religion (evolution vs. 'creationism' in schools) - and it's a point of view is no more an option than the world is flat.

No offense but question is not v.understandable.
Religion is a person's belief system and values if you 'abuse' it by slandering it, then in a way you are slandering them. That's going to offend them and they are likely to report you for abuse on this forum.
Science is different it's objective, it's less a matter of opinion and belief and more about fact.
People don't necessarily hold scientific theories/views close to their heart, whereas religious beliefs go much deeper.
For some ppl their religion saved them from a life of addiction or misery, for others its their tradition and their heritage.
Science on the other hand changes and is updated and that's fine because its all about the latest discoveries and what we as humans are able to measure and quantify.
I love God and I love science as well, keep them separate or put them together - I don't mind. F.W.z

Let me guess:
Science is more powerful and it is not fair to pick on the weak.
Religious leaders who frighten the flock need to keep them in line and anyone who would attack the flock? It is difficult to shear frightened sheep.
Science can accommodate bigotry with data. Religions that are fixated on one everlasting gospel can only erode and rot?
As science grows, dogma fades.
Literalism is loony.
Science has no agenda but to understand, predict and control the natural environment while religion attempts only to control the pockets of the followers.

Because yahoo doesn't read what's being reported. They just send out a violation e-mail, dust off their hands, and get back to slacking off in front of a computer. You should report some religious people for offending others since they think they're all self-righteous.

I think it is the level of abuse, rather than the abuse that is the problem. The abusive language used against religions is deeply offensive. I haven't noticed the same level used against other people.
It isn't discussion, just ranting.

A GREAT point.
There have been many times when I would love to report someone for blatently LYING about a matter of science (e.g., "evolution says that man evolved from monkeys).
They can lie through their teeth, but don't you dare even joke about their religion. ... they call the censorship nazis.

Science and religion are fundamentally different--ask any atheist. Religion is more personal; people have a real stake in the thing being attacked.

Because it is a very touchy subject. And in case you are just waking up, tons of wars have been fought over this subject matter. So it is best to be nice and not to push the envelope too far.

You can report someone for having toast for breakfast. But to be a justifiable report, the alleged offense should be in fact a deliberate offense, not just a statement of belief that may be supportable on evidence.

Most of the time people are not abusing the religion (whichever it is) but the followers of the religion.
