It's no problem. they are accually specing the same power just calling it a slightly differnt thing. They could say "single phase US standard residential line voltage". thats called 110, 120, or 115. all are really the same. That is opposed to 220 two phase for washing machines and outdoor house air conditioners and other power hungry devices.

Will it burn up the motor in a 115v portable washing machine unit by plugging it into a 220v outlet instead of 110V?

If the outlet is 110v and the device is rated for 230v then the answer is no. You can use step transformers but the load is quite large and would not be economical. However 110v outlets can be upgraded to take 220v by introducing a 3rd wire (without getting too technical). I suggest you contact a reliable electrician who should be able to do this for you.

Australian standards allow for 5% voltage drop. This is based on a world wide convention with manufactures to allow for at least 5% variation of supply voltage. This would mean for a 115V motor that it has a tolerance of 109.25V to 120.75V. So you will be OK.
Oh by the way I have decided to assume everyone else is from my country as is common with many on Yahoo from a particular country. But what i have said is valid and we do have 115V in Australia just not common.

Go ahead. It's the same thing. 110v and 115v are approximations.
The critical thing is the amperage of the circuit.

You should be fine. Most outlets are 110-120 volts. Five volts won't change much. In fact, it'll mean less energy moving through the machine. The only problem you might have is it not cooling quite as much (though not by much).

For the purposes of household AC power engineering, 110v, 115v and 120v are all "the same."

NO....your unit will probable run with as little as 100 volts AC and can handle as much as 125 volts AC.
