He was and still is YELLOW BELLY DRAFT DODGER. Many men of all races died in the war, but this coward changed religion, spent a little time in jail and stripped of his belt. They should of put a life time BAN on him so he would not box any more. Even Elvis enlisted in the military (though he was just a driver) he did not run like "ALI" did!!

Yellow belly draft dodger, because he converted to islam to escape the draft, and a conscientious objector because he did stand up for his beliefs, or reasons he didn't want to be in the war. Either way he was a pretty great boxer.

Ali stood up for his beliefs. It cost him greatly for a period of time.
In the end he was vindicated when the Supreme Court overturned his conviction. I do believe he was a conscientious objector. One point I'd like to make, how could the geniuses in the governing bodies of boxing at the time strip him of his license and the heavyweight title without due process? They did this before he went to trial and was convicted of "draft dodging". When he was convicted and appealed his sentence he still should have been allowed to box. If the Supreme Court had upheld his sentence, then he's stripped of his license and title and goes to prison. "Innocent until proven guilty" is what we base on our legal system on. In this instance that was not so.

If Ali was genuinely a "draft dodger" after he was vindicated by the Supreme Court he would have pursued lawsuits against many people and organizations for lost income. But Ali was
genuine in his stance against the Vietnam war and did nothing of the sort. I truly believe if he had been faced with the country going to war against Hitler and the Nazi regime he would have volunteered
as Joe Louis did.

I say all of this as a proud veteran of our armed forces, who by the way believes the draft is unconstitutional.

I assume you mean Muhammad Ali - Clay was his slave name which he quit using upon his conversion to Islam. Besides being one of the most-loved people in the country, he is genuinely sincere in his religious beliefs. I was blessed with the opportunity to meet with and talk to this truly great man about 28 years ago and can assure you his religious beliefs are quite strong and that his objections to the VietNam War were spiritual in nature.

Its a pity he has had to suffer with Parkinson's for so many years and has essentially lost the ability to speak coherantly. Were he able to I'm confident he would strongly condemn the actions of the Muslim fanatics who have spread so much misery over the world in the last decade.

A total coward. Used Islam as the religion of "peace". Really! Islam. He was dodging the draft to save his ***. .I was drafted and served my 2 years. My brother served 6 yrs both in Europe and in Vietnam. He was just trying to prevent himself from having to put himself in jeopardy. Have felt this way since 60"s

Conscientious objector.

I guess it comes down to the fact that when he was in Rome he was respected. He came back home and he couldn't get served in a diner. We don't serve coloured folks, he replied I don't eat them either. It was also said that he was rejected for Army service or failed the entrance exam, another point is no Viet Cong called him ******, according to Ali.

The draft violates the 13th ammendment of the constitution, anyone that "dodged" the draft was only standing up for their constitutional rights.

Being a famous black man who stood up for civil rights in America at that time was probably just as dangerous as being in Vietnam anyway. It is much better to die on your own terms and take your own risks than to be forced to die for something you don't believe in.

How about Jack Dempsey who dodged the draft by working on the docks in WW1. How about George Bush who did not even finish his Air Force Reserve training.
