It was a major motion picture in 1970 starring James Earl Jones (the voice of Darth Vader), Jane Alexander, Hal Holbrook, Beah Richards and Moses Gunn. The main character's name is Jack Jefferson and his life is loosely based on "The Big Black Fire', Jack Johnson.

Jim Jeffries was the original white hope as dubbed by writer Jack London in 1910 during his attempt to beat black heavyweight champion Jack Johnson who won by 15th round TKO. He came out of retirement after 5 years in this failed attempt. This was Jeffries only professional loss.

It originally referred to James J. Jeffries (1875-1953), a white boxer who came out of retirement in 1910 in an attempt to dislodge the first black world boxing heavyweight champion, Jack Johnson.
By extension, it came to refer to all white boxers seen as contenders for dethroning Johnson, or latterly, any other black champion.
