There are many out there that do not require any service feature at all.

One of the most popular ones right now is the Tom Tom.

I like the Garmin Ipaq, since it has a build in PDA as well as a GPS device.

You buy the small square object which is like a thin camera with a screen. It is very simple to start and most of the common instructions are simple. It is simple to use and an excellent piece of equipment. You do not have to pay to view, that is included in the original price. After three months, if you want to update speed cameras and such, you pay a fee through your Internet and it gets updated. If you are visiting another country you can also have its road and street systems downloaded for a fee. A brilliant piece of equipment that will take you from door to door - literally................
You can buy one that is a permanent fixture in your car or you can have a hand-held which can be used in the car or when walking - brilliant............

No you don't. Just buy it and off you go. BUT, you might in the future wish to update the maps in it (if new roads are built, say), which they could charge you for. Make sure you buy one with the option of downloading updates over the net, not all of them do that. I use a Garmin Streetpilot c330 and it works pretty well. You probably get what you pay for.

I have two Garmin and two Lowrance gps' and depending upon where you want to navigate, they both are good. You have to have a blue chart for garmin and gold for lowrance. I have one in the car and it's great. The others are on my boats. You download what programs you want, after purchasing the discs.

No you just need the system. it receives its information from a signal which is broad casted by salties. all GPS equipment runs off the same government signal. the only thing is that your software will become out dated every 2 years or so. you will have to by new and updated maps. they run about $100. and you just replace the DVD in the nav system
