I tried shampooing and drying hair thinking it would be able to lock in preparation for locs, however after 2 days hair unravelled should I just wait until new growth comes through completely and start from stratch? And what is quickest method please?(have had this question here before but as I'm new to this, think I deleted question by mistake!)*and no silly answers about wearing wig/hat etc please*

Thank you!

I think I answered this question for you before and you didn’t understand.

First, to stop the breaking of your hair use a weaker perm until you don’t have to use it anymore. This will take about 3-4 tries, start with your normal perm then work your way down to a children’s perm, which is very light. The hair will break between the perm and natural section if you don’t do this, because of the difference in textures. I have been natural for 2 years now and I did it the wrong way. My hair broke between the natural and perm part and had to cut my hair because of this.

Secondly, after you hair starts to grow out, put weave in your hair that looks like dreads. Some people will not be able to tell the difference if it’s done correctly. After a while your hair will be able to lock. By putting the weave in it will help your hair to lock and not unravel. You also need that new growth to be able to lock your hair. I am not dreading my hair but I know people who have done this and it works. Or you can wait until the natural part of you hair grows long enough to lock.

P.S. Make sure you keep you hair conditioned and oiled because if you don’t, once your hair starts to lock, the locks will break because they are dry and damaged.

Curly perm my eye! You know that is just a glorified Gheri curl! I didn't know anybody still sported that! Congratulations on coming on back! Backcombing and stripping and all that other stuff people will recommend will only snatch you bald headed over time. Wait for your new growth. In the meantime, you can try twist locks by using one of the strong freeze spray products. They should make the locks last a bit longer. Avoid using too much beeswax as it only makes hair sticky and smelly.
Good luck and welcome back to the natural!

BACK-COMBING! do you remember it from the 80s? all the poodle rockers used to do it, bon Jovi, Poison, motley crue etc. get a afro comb, hold a section of your hair up in the hair, and comb your hair backwards many times! repeat! why on earth do you want an afro though? i spent my entire school years trying to grow my natural afro out!!!
