I think it depends on the religion. Jews mark their days sunset to sunset. So a Saturday fast (not that I even know if such a thing exists) would start at sunset on Friday and end with sunset on Saturday.
When Catholics fast (particularly during Lent), we clock it midnight to midnight. Most of us in reality observe the fast during our waking hours of that day. (Not that we eat in our sleep or anything.)

My guess is that it will happen in about 8 years; after global warming raises water, floods low lying areas, creates millions of refuges looking for space and food, and mankind is involved in a world wide religions war to kill off illegal aliens.
