OK. Two of the answers you've gotten were correct. The panoramic x-ray is ONE, CONTINUOUS x-ray that takes an image from one side of your mouth to the other (not a series where they move the film in your your mouth; those are bite-wings).
Since the procedure has already been properly explained, there's no need for me to repeat it.

They'll ask you to put on a heavy apron to help protect you from the x-rays. You usually stand up, and they put this kind of big plastic thing in you rmouth(it's what holds the film the x-rays will show up on). Then they have a machine that covers about 180 degrees in front of your head, that's what takes the x-rays. You keep your head straight, looking forward, and then they take a shot from the front, one on the left, one on the right. You don't feel anything other than biting on the thing they put in your mouth, which they may change a couple times. Then they'll take your apron and have you sit down while they develop the xrays. Then they'll talk to you about what they see and what work needs to be done.

You'll be asked to bite down on a piece of plastic. While you do that, they'll cover your torso with a heavy apron to protect it from the x-rays, then do an x-ray scan of one side, then the other, then going from one side to the other. They will then be able to show you what your teeth look like in your jaw. It's non-invasive and completely safe.

I'm not sure step by step but I had one when I thought I broke my jaw in a soccer game. All I had to do was stand up facing the machine, I had to keep my head really still (of course) and the machine started on my left side of my head and it rotated around the front and around to the right side of my head. It's painless and pretty quick, they just want to see a full picture of your teeth, not a big deal : )
I put a link to Wikipedia about it for you...

It's just several views of your teeth/mouth. The last time I had it done, I had to stand on something and put my mouth over the mouth piece which was going to take the x-ray. It's a little uncomfortable, but nothing that bad. Seems like they took a million x-rays. I think I was glowing when I left.
