Sorry, no one size fits all answer here. Fortunately, drug use peaked in the 70s and has been declining since. Of course, that is little comfort when it strikes close to you. Too many people still choose drugs, for myriad reasons.

Aversion therapy and positive reinforcement are the two primary avenues to reduce drug use.

Aversion therapy is the idea of educating the subjects that drug use is harmful. Do you remember the egg and the frying pan commercial? This is your brain(the egg), and this is your brain on drugs(egg frying in the frying pan). The follow up used Juliette Lewis, a popular actress, destroying a kitchen with a frying pan, saying this is your brain on heroin.

PSAs such as this are helpful to the extent that they speak to the target audience. It is best helpful if the young people actually help create the PSA, and do the requisite research and see the realities.

Peer pressure works in several ways. Some young people simply can't be bothered with drugs because they are too busy playing football, or video games or doing homework, or working at a real job. Drugs interfere with what they would like to do.

15 years old is old enough to start to think about the future, and to set goals, and develop strategies to attain those goals. Periodic review of the strategies will help keep focussed on the cause and effects of their actions.

Positive reinforcement for being too busy accomplishing things and enjoying life too much would be my first choice. All young people can accomplish, all need to learn the steps to acheiving goals.

Both my boys hate rollercoasters. I describe drug and alcohol use as being a on the worst rollercoaster ride ever. Can't control it when your on it, can't stop it even when you scream, and more than likely the cars crash or fly off the tracks. The worst ride ever.
Keep talking to your kids, never stop.
My boys have lost a sister and have learned how valuable and precious life is at 5 and 8 years of age. We thank god every night for each day we have together. We take nothing for granted. Don't take for granted that they are aware the power is in prayer.
God bless you and your family.

Wish I knew. My kids 3 of 4 saw what it did to their dad and they are all very straight. The 4th is cools both in and out of jail. The writing is on the wall...they just don't want to see it.
See if any hospitals in your area have people in a veg state from drugs....That might work. The youth think they are invincible...Sadly many have been buried with that thought. I was and have been like a bird dog with my one child and she at 40 still thinks shes above it.

There is a program in NY where they take kids to a rehap center to talk to recovering addict and the they show them the inside of a jail cell .But it should start at home .Then it should be talked about in the schools .And then all you can do is pray and hope that they take the right path

Parent them.

Seriously, talk to them - tell them the truth, and by all means, set a good example.

Watching Star Trek helps too - at a young age that taught me a lot about good morales and such.

Ask the school to get involved and maybe they can have an assembly to let the kids know how dangerous it is and that it is not tolerated.

Pay attention to your kids and teach them about the dangers of illegal drugs before one of the neighborhood hoodlums teaches them how "cool" they are.
