As some of the responses already suggest, you should only trust any deposit money to a reputable renter.

In the Tahoe area, there are many such agencie. The Better Business Bureau can give you a list of members who have a proven track record.

Even those homeowners who rent their cabins out for the time they are not in residence will usually have an agency make arrangements and assure a renter gets a clean place in good condition with all the proper ameneties such as bedding, toilet tissue, etc.

My family has done this several times with little cause for complaint.

Go online and get started. A couple of google searches should put you in touch with several resources.

Try, "Lake Tahoe, cabin rental."

If this is a free weekend, and you have to take a timeshare tour? It's really actually legit. If you're getting the weekend free because you're going to take the tour and you don't want a timeshare, remain steadfast in that you don't want one, because you can really get caought up in the idea of "free vacations" for life, and of course they are not free. If it's not that, well Lake Tahoe is a really small community, find out first if it's North or South Shore, and then call any realtor's office that does vacation rentals and I can almost guarantee they will know about the property. I actually would not go to the BBB - they are beholden to their contributors and again Lake Tahoe is a really small town read between the lines here. Good luck have fun I'm jealous

You should have no problem in Lake Tahoe. Grew up skiing there as a teen. I would check with the real estate agent and they can send pictures of the cabin and area and also fax rental agreement! Call and check it out. Or e-mail. Enjoy beautiful country.

Call the Lake Tahoe Police Dept and tell them your concerns; ask them if they know anything about the cabin/renter; if they're no help, call the Chamber of Commerce; as a last resort, go on-line and do a background check...oh, and check with the local better business bureau to see if complaints have ever been filed...

Contact the BBB in Lake Tahoe. They can tell you if it is a legal rental.
Or you can always call police and ask them about the cabin and location. Am sure they well know if it is indeed a rental.
See if the people your renting from have a business license.

Better business bureau is a great place to check. Also Lake Tahoe should have a visitors bureau. Property rental is big business in tahoe, reputation is everything i would imagine and you really shouldn't have a problem. If you got there and had problems, you have reasonable cost alternatives nearby....so at least your vacation isn't ruined.

You have received some good suggestions and tips for checking things out.
But your question leads to some questions - such as what is it about your rental arrangement that leads you to think it might not be legit and if there was something fishy, why did you make the arrangement in the first place?

well i guess you could call town hall and see if they are the owners of the property. see if they are going to do a rentals lease and take it to a lawyer and see if is legit. or call the local law office and see if they know anything about the cabin you want to rent. you never said why you think it sounds suspicious to you.

I would only trust it if it was from a real estate company. Heard many horror stories from tahoe of double and triple booking.

They probably would be able to give you a verification number if you booked and paid. You might also try checking a site like tripadvisor.com or something to see other peoples reviews of the same place and see what they thought about it.
