I think a more worthwhile comparison would be to that of child molestors, FYI...
I haven't done the research on it, but it appears to me that pedophilia could be genetic, as well. However, the only reason I say this is because pedophiles tend to be "incurable", and they are almost always repeat offenders.
I'm not judging one way or another, and I don't mean to lump homosexuals in the same category as pedophiles. However, I think that the amount of hatred towards pedophiles in our modern times is about the same as the hatred toward homosexuals was a few hundred years ago...
Edit - And for all of the bible thumpers out there that typically despise me... :) Don't you ever try to say that I'm not intellectually honest. I'm supporting you on this one particular subject, though it certainly goes against atheist "politics"...

I'M SORRY ABOUT THE HATE MAIL,I'M FROM ENGLAND AND WE TEND TO KICK F$$$$$K OUT OF SOMEONE RATHER THAN WASTE MONEY.
I did it in big letters so you would read it, not wanting to appear rude.
so let me get this right cos i missed the first bit are you seriously stating that you have a alcohol problem because of your genes, or that homosexuality and anger are genetic linked, you must be serious about this so i suggest you read more than a site that is biased,we all like to blame something or someone, its easy meat
genes dont answer back you can still find alcohol detox programs that lay the blame on a disease, society as more to do with the drink problem than genes we put pressure on ourselves to come up with the goods at work and at home, we have our children at a young age when the pressure to be the perfect parent and live a lifestyle that you cannot afford drink is the drug that steals your rationale, anger is an emotion that surfaces when you are challenged physically or intellectually, or are too drunk to care, who you hurt to make your point, i have theory about homosexuality, and you may be right about the genetic-link if you were to believe ever thing you read, there are vast amounts of theories thankfully most of them discredited, we are all entitled to an opinion regards FL

Let's stress the word tendency. My father was a full blown alcoholic, but none of his children were. At one point in my life I feared that I might become alcoholic and started going to AA. One of the requirements for membership is the desire to stop drinking. I was basically drummed out of the meetings. I also worked as a Chemical Depency nurse for 30 years and saw all degrees of alcoholism. Yes,I think there can be a "tendency"and if you think you might be an alcoholic, you don't have to drink.

You go under the assumtion that homosexuality is on par with alcoholism, or anger tendencies. Being straight has a linkage to something as well. Are you going to lump it in with the bad also? Some religions feel homosexuality is wrong. Others do not mind it. Why do you personaly care what people do sexually? If someone is not following your gods law, why do you care? Should you not be worried only about yourself in matters of religion?

The difference is whether or not innocent people are directly harmed by such activity. Two guys getting it on in private in no way harms you or threatens you in any way. Your only objection to it is a silly book written thousands of years ago by ignorant bedouine barbarians. People like you to frequently try to claim it's immoral because it isn't natural (even though that isn't your real objection to it).
So then, showing that it IS natural smashes your false argument and makes you go back to quoting Bible verses which can simply be dismissed out of hand from a secular perspective.
Of course, arguments from nature are not valid anyway. Air conditioning isn't natural either but no-one seems to be up in arms about how immoral it is.

However, because they are genetic. i.e. something one cannot control, then people are more understanding of these conditions, rather than outright blaming someone because they simply don't put down the bottle.
Even if the "condition" is deemed "bad", to show it is an uncontrollable part of genetics shows that these people do not choose to be bad. That is an important step to fairly dealing with people with such genetic "conditions".

People are running alot of different angles with this... hate mail is just purely always unneccessary folks ... take a few deep breaths ..give the benefit of the doubt .. and later, even if you think you judged right in first place .. what could hate mail accomplish excepting proving you are a loon?
We all have to be responsible for what in essence we are ... If someone drunk, commits an act of vehicular homicide or manslaughter .. would we accept the excuse, "It wasn't my fault .. I was just drunk" .. no we wouldn't ... all actions can lead to consequences ... "propensity or disposition" does not evade ultimately, any responsibilities ..

Let me get this straight, you are trying to make a connection between homosexuality, and alchoolism and anger?
Gee, I can't imagine why you got some hate mail. Personally I'd like to congratulate those that did so.
Plus, consider yourself reported for this bit of hateful clap-trap too!

Yep, and what about genetically linked kleptomaniacs? Should we make it legal for them to shoplift at WalMart, since they really can't help being born that way?
HEY, we might be on to something here!!

wait... is this a question or a statement? if someone has alcoholism in the genes, then they should stay away from it so they don't turn into rambling drunks is all I have to say to this odd statement.
