Is it me but do some parents take this rule a little too much to heart? The other day outside the Publix while a mother was loading her groceries into her breeder mobile...cough....minivan.... the lady's kid asked a cop sitting in his car next to her van how old his K-9 in the backseat was. Well.....I thought for a second that lady saw the devil, man did she go off on that kid for speaking to a stranger in this case a cop. I don't know about you guys but seriously a cop!!!! I don't see the harm in talking to a cop as a small child. In the long run I think people who teach their kids not to talk to strangers are setting up their kids to spend their adult lives being afraid of people and becoming anti-social. Stop teaching your children to view everybody as wrong/right, black/white and teach your kids some god damn judgement and critical thinking skills. Very few strangers are out to get your kids. The news media unfortunately brain washes you to think other.

This kid could have been in danger. There are people who dress up as cops to gain people's trust. I know it's sick, but it does happen. Kids should be allowed to talk to cops, as long as they're in a marked police car.

It's sad that the actions of a few sick people can sabotage the confidence we have in others.

I think it is a bit extreme for her to go off on the kid for talking to a cop. We're supposed to be teaching our children that cops are OK to talk to and go to for help.

On the other hand, my children take their cues from me. If I talk to someone, that means it's okay for them to talk to someone. If I don't they don't either. They are little yet, as they get older, I hope that they can learn to use judgement as I have.

Actually, it's important for a child to distinguish between a dangerous stranger, and a helpful one. A child needs to be able to go to a stranger for help in case he or she gets lost, abducted, or hurt in an accident. Actually, when police give the talks to groups of kids they cannot stress enough to learn when it is ok to talk to someone. (Librarian, grocery store worker, police and firefighters, neighbor. etc.) I worry for the children of that woman you saw.

well, you probably dont know the whole story behind it, maybe the child talks to all strangers and the mom is trying to break the habit by telling them not to talk to ANYONE they dont know. i dont think it is a bad thing, you have to be careful these days, i mean in just my neighborhood i have several kids that have approached me on my nightly walk and talk to me, there arent any parents around and i could easily have kidnapped them if i wanted to. in my opinion it is better to be safe than sorry. just talk to someone who has had their child abducted, they will probably change your opinion on that. and its not necessarily always the parents fault if their child gets kidnapped, children are being taken from their own homes. its a nasty world out there, and i will teach my daughter not to talk to strangers, i want to see her grow up
