It depends on how old you are... you should get at least 90 minutes of cardio a week though..

It depends.
First of all, before starting, I think a healthy run has to be done after the body has rested for 28 hours.
Assuming that, the length of the run should be predetermined time between 45-60 minutes.
If it is your weekend long run, up to 2 hours is OK.

If you are running for a cardio workout your heart rate hits it's high at about 8 mins, then it stays in that zone for as long as you run. So if you run for just 8 mins you really don't get much of a cardio workout. Aim for at least 15 for cardio.
If you are running for fat burn, you'll want to run longer. The fat burn zone happens at about your 12 minute. So any calories burned after then are mostlikey fat calories. For an effective fat burn run, go at least 20 minutes.

30 mins is ideal. 2-3 miles in that time is an excellent workout.

If you are starting the running regime, I recommend you starting at thirty minutes on flat surfaces and build up slowly to a good pace for yourself. It will also depend on your ultimate goal, ie: weight loss, endurance improvement, strength building.
Short fast sprints are also good to throw into a regular running routine. This will help with your overall fitness.

well depending on what your goal is i would say you should be done right at about 45 minutes. right at 47 minutes chemical levels in your body get out of proportion and you end up just wearing yourself out.
